As this was a Long day we arrived quite late and were met by a couple of Polish Perigrino’s who were also searching for accommodation, so we decided to blow the budget and try the rather expensive “Hotel Imperio Do Minho” on our way past (This is the first hotel that you come to when walking into the town) and we were lucky enough to find that they had rooms available. More expensive than I would normally expect to pay when Camino walking at 55 Euro per room for two sharing or 40 euro for a single, But this does include a Substantial discount for Perigrino’s Prices do include a substantial breakfast and there is a swimming pool, Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to use this as we were up again fairly early the next morning and walking again.

“Hotel Residencial Dom Nuno” by into-thin-air We had a few problems finding accommodation in Barcelos, The most places mentioned in Our guidebook were either full or closed so we went to the tourist information office and they told us about the “Hotel Residencial Dom Nuno” This turned out to be an excellent choice too, Nice en-suite rooms with balcony, substantial breakfast included in the price of 45 euro per room. This actually might be a better place to stay than the previously highly rated “Residencial Arantes” as we heard some dire report about this place from fellow Perigrino’s

The Albergue at Rates is Excellent, Situated on the left side of the route as it leaves the town centre. This was the first official Albergue on the Portuguese side of the Camino Portuguese, opening in 2004. It has three dormitories, great showers with ample hot water and good clean and toilets and also a well equipped kitchen and nice lounge. There is a garden and small museum to the rear. The key is available from the shop on the right hand side if the road just past the Albergue. Donations Please There are several eating places open in Rates in the evening including a fast food outlet Theme: Other

There would appear to be a lack of good budget type accommodation in Porto, But after extensive web- searching I found the Andarilho Hostel. Centrally located and with good metro links (Direct metro from the airport to within an easy stroll of the hostel) this made a very good choice, Beds fro 18 euro in 6 / 8 / 10 person dormitories, Bed linen and towels provided in the price, Good showers and toilets and lockers for your more valuable items (Key from reception for a small deposit) I thought a Good Choice for Porto No Curfew Theme: HostelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Andarilho Oporto Hostel. had made a booking via Internet for Hotel VIP Miramonte in Colares, close to Sintra, before leaving to Portugal, so we knew there would be a place waiting for us after our 9 night adventure on various pensions and before we'd return back to Lisbon 3 days before our flight back to Israel. The price was 50 Euro per night for a fantastic double room overlooking the swimming pool and the gardens. The room was totally new and very comfortable. I swam at the pool outside even though the water was really cold, it was the 25th of Sept 2004.We also played table tennis in the room by the lobby downstairs of the building our room was in. The hotel has several buildings and very beautiful gardens around them. The price didn't include breakfast. We could have had one for 4 Euro per person, but we chose to eat things we had bought from Supermarket (You can buy ALOT in the supermarket for 8 Euro in Portugal -Minipreco is very cheap and great value, look for products that have the brand "dia" on them with a red stripe) at the room, and as we had our "electric fork" for boiling water in a cup for coffee/tea, this was not a problem. We made our coffee/tea at the room in every place we stayed, we only needed the right adaptor for the electricity which we were used to having with us (a whole collection of them to fit any electricity, even on ships!). This was the second time we stayed at VIP hotels, the first one was aparthotel VIP Eden in Lisbon - see my tip for it, and I have to say that these hotels are very high standard without being expensive and it is a real pleasure to stay in them. If I'll ever go back to Portugal, I will again look for VIP hotels. We stayed for 2 nights. The beach, Praia das Macas is only 5 minutes by car from there and to Sintra it is only 10 minutes drive.See another view from the window of the room on my Colares page.
Very relaxing place! breakfast in coimbra's youthhostel by primaverita Maybe for me Coimbra wasn't the place I loved most in Portugal, but in the youthhostel I met some nice travellingmates with whom I ate in a very nice restaurant- café. The host og the hostel was a guy which liked to talk about his hometown and made some good suggestions where to go and what to do. He also explained some of the typical Portuguese costums, so if you are interested, go to this hostel and say hi for me. The hostel is near the university area so it takes just five minutes to go there, of course there is a breakfast included in the price as almost every hostel I went to which was linked to hihostels. If you're not coming by car, here's some direction. I arrived at the trainstation Oriente in Lisboa. From there do not take a subway to Alameda, which I did and which was great fun, since it is so hard to explain in Portuguese where you have to go. No, take the local train to Aveiro, then to Pragal ( the cost is about 4,50 ida e volta ( returnticket). Then get out and ask. A friendly woman will call the taxi for you and ask where the adress is as soon as you show her the adress. Then she will explain that you have to walk in the direction of the hospital. Behind the hospital is a little street which goes up. At the end of this street is the pousada. The location is tremendous, great, fantastic. The breakfast is included in the price. You get a key which you have to give to the reception whenever you leave your room. For the breakfast you get a ticket. You can pay with creditcard. The following lines are nice to remember: Bom dia/ boa tarde, tem uma reserva feita ( well at least I did), posso pagar com cartaõ de credito? E el pequeno almorço?Obrigada/o The breakfast is a yoghurt, cup of coffee, cornflakes with milk, some more coffee with milk, juice, bread, ham, jelly, cheese, butter. I mention this since the food is almost the most important on a voyage ( well, I was told by a nice Israelian girl!) The team will provide you with all the info you need and their English is great. Take bus nro 53 in direction to Lisboa, it will take you 30 min. Have fun and relax! More info about this hostel you find on other memberpages. Theme: HostelComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: at almada, across the river, you'll have a view on belem, la ponte de 25 de abril, lisboa, and the statue of Jesus
