National Youth Hostels of Portugal: Youth Hostel

by Martin_S.

We stayed in the youth hostel at Foz Coa in the north and we were surprised and pleased by the place. It is situated a little out of town so would be inconvenient for anyone without a car, but for a twin room we paid only 26 Euro a night, an excellent price. Some of the facilities have only shared bathrooms and showers, we opted for the en suite (in the room), which costs more.
They also gave us a simple and sparse breakfast, but it was sufficient to begin the day. They also have washing machines which is a plus for travelers.

In Portugal there is a system of 46 hostels spread across the country and another 8 in the islands.

You can check them out at:

yes hostel and lisbon lounge hostel: hostels in lisbon

by rkearns

if you're open to staying in a hostel, you and your boyfriend could get your own room. this place where i stayed with my bf at the time is really awesome.

http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Lisbon-Lounge-Hostel/Lisbon/11827

it's clean, modern, artsy, professional, spacious, the staff is really helpful, and it's in a great location. it's one of the top three hostels i've stayed.

the other one i liked is this one:

http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Yes-Lisbon-Hostel/Lisbon/36649

not as cool, but still along the same vein. they even have dinners once a week where everyone eats together. it's very communal.

otherwise, maybe there is something on craigslist for apt. sublets. i'm sure a simple google search could get you to some apt. websites. hope that helps.

Pensao Portuense, Lisbon: A Gem of a Hotel

by piglet44

Well I cannot praise this hotel enough. The hotel is located right near Rossio Square but behind the square so it is not noisy. There are a million little restaurants in the street below where you can eat.The best thing though is the staff.Hussein especially, after we were pickpocketed on our way back from Belem, was so helpful and charming. He calmed us down and put us in touch with the tourist police, and he let us call home free of charge to cancel our visa. He was most gracious and lovely it really helped us to put the event behind us and enjoy the rest of the trip.I can utterly recommend this lovely hotel.

The staff and their helpfulness.

Mesao Frio: Pousada in the Douro Vally

by colares

This place can only be reached by car (or taxi from Regua). It has nice views over the valley. Its an old house with furniture out of that period.
You must make sure that you have a room with river view. (More expensive). The others are smaller and have absolute no view.
The garden is nice, the area is calm, a pool is available.
The restaurant is expensive but good. In Regua (10 min by car) you have more options at reasonable rates.

The furniture and ambiance.

Hotel Alvor Park: Our Winter Retreat

by Balam

The hotel is part of The Pestana group of hotels and resorts, one of 5 in Alvor. beautifully furnished rooms with all the amenity's you would wish for, (there are 55 apartment type rooms). the staff are friendly and helpful. The first year we stayed there the restaurant was open in the evenings and the food if not a little pricey was first class, but in 2007 they had decided that it was not worth opening in October because it was not that busy and so it just opened in the afternoon for lunch which was a great disappointment and also proves inconvinent for people who do not wish to walk into or around Alvor when it may well be cold and raining. Another great let down is the hotel bar, now we don't want long nights of loud disco music and alcohol fuelled conversation but a few drinks with a bit of music would be nice, instead all you get is a TV with football on or silence. absolutely no atmosphere at all, something that they really do need to do something about. Just some music would help.
In Oct 2008 i have arrived to find that they are now charging for use of the wireless internet and at €8 per hour it can work out very expensive for people who have work to do or just like to keep in touch with friends.

The Aparthotel offers a swimming pool, Health club, sauna, spa, laundry, Restaurant/snack bar

all in all it is a nice hotel but it really does need a few points addressing

Vale do Lobo: Resort

by carnsoreboxer

Vale do Lobo is a lovely resort to stay in very close to Quinta do Lago and Dunes Durados. It is built beside the beach and on site there are 2 golf courses, tennis courts, numerous restaurants, 2 spa centres with pools, 2 fitness areas. It is perfect for families or couples trvelling on their own.

Specific accommodation - 854b I booked this directly with the owner and was advertised as being 2 bedroomed. In reality it is a 1 bedroom apartment which has recently been remodelled. The kitchen has been made smaller and a tiny room with twin beds put in. There is no window or ventilation in this room only glass bricks in part of the wall. We got away with it as we had our 15 year old son with us but it would have been a nightmare with another couple. Storage or lack of it was a problem. First thing we had to do was put some of the owners rubbish away to attempt to make space for ourselves.

Other apartments, there are 4 in a block with a and b downstairs are fine. C and D are proper 2 bedroomed and are terrific.

Cant really say anything positive about our accommodation but others were very nice with reasonable views. Were I to go again I would get villa with pool.

Vale do Lobo is very expensite however I was fortunate enough to be given 2 vouchers for the spa which was a real treat.

Ampallius: Best for golf

by carnsoreboxer

In Villamoura, on the beach, ample sized twin rooms though would recommend going for sea view as they are bigger. Has outdoor pool, good bars and best of all free return transfers to all the golf courses

Breakfast here is incredidble and will keep you going for the day.

Velamar Hotel: Never judge a book by its cover!

by TJS1

Booked through Easyjet along with my flight and car I was very fortunate to end up in this very reasonable b&b hotel.
Even in high season this hotel is far enough out of the centre of Olhos d'Agua that you would not be overrun with tourists.
Within a short walk of the hotel there are several decent eateries. I cannot remember the name of my favourite, so you will have to try them all.
The hotel has well appointed en-suite rooms, an indoor games area and an outdoor pool. Being March, and very quiet in the hotel, the outdoor pool was not open.
If like me you are driving then there is adequate parking in the hotel grounds.

Hostels in Portugal

by J_Antunes

There are 4 great places to search for hostels in Portugal: www.hostelworld.com (doesn't have the state hostels but offers online booking service for the others), www.hostelz (has a pretty good compilation of hostels), www.pousadasjuventude.pt (with all the state hostels and online booking service) or www.hihostels.com. I normally try not to book through hostelworld because they charge a tax and if I quit they won't give it back. So I normally try to contact the hostel directly and book there (however it isn't always possible).

Most hostels in Portugal are quite good so it is always a good option especially if you want to meet new people. However in websites such as www.booking.com you might find good and cheap hotels, even cheaper than the hostels.

Hostels are great places to meet new people, to party and find relaxed, laid back environment.
