More about Riu Palace Madeira
Pure Riu Class
Arrived at the hotel on 21st Aug for a week's intended total peace and relaxation. My wife had other idea's!! We went on 2 afternoon trips and 2 full days out, but you do see what this beautiful island has to offer. The hotel was superb in all area's and run in a very professional manner. The food was very good and a varied selection at all meals. All public area's and bedrooms were cleaned spotlessly. The entertainment is limited but watchable and suitable for the mixed clientele that were staying at the hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and polite and went about their duties in a friendly manner. It was our friends 25th anniversary and the staff helped celebrate this with a song and a cheer in the dining room which was a very nice thought by the management. Overall this hotel is deserved its high reputation and I will definately be going back at sometime.
beautiful hotel, beautiful island
Arrived at the Riu Palace on the 21st aug 2006. It was a lovely hotel. Staff were great and room was great. Had our room on the 7th floor with a nice balcony. The veiws were great overlooking both the pool and the sea. Madeira is a very hilly place so it pays to be fit. Canico De Baxio is a bit away from Funchal, but the Riu has a courtesy bus which goes in daily.
The island itself is well worth exploring. We did a few trips, the best being the western trip and the eastern trip. We also did a guided levada walk which I would recommend. The place was full of Germans as previous guests have mentioned and they do tend to be a bit loud. But the hotel is large enough for everyone to find a quiet spot. The swimming pools were great. Found the indoor one a bit chilly when we first went in but you get used to it very quickly and it never put us off. We never were disturbed by any noises at all. Once you are in the room and the door is shut, it's hard to beleive that there are hundreds of other guests.
The food is plentiful and as another guest said in a previous review, if you go hungry its your own fault.
Would I go back to the Riu Palace again. Definately.
As good as any 5 * USA hotel
The service at this hotel is excellent. The staff are always ready to help and assist and all service is with a smile.
The bedrooms/bathrooms are roomy and the hotel is extremely clean.
The food is excellent with a wide choice to suit most people.
I note the previous comments regarding Germans, but I would say there are equal numbers of Brits as well, as we really never noticed them being loud.
I would certainly go back to his hotel, and recommend it wholeheartedly. It is a great place to chill out.
Best Hotel I have Stayed In to Date!
Rooms were incrediably spacious and well equipped and beautifully decorated. This matched the overall standard and upkeep of the hotel which I have to say is absolutely stunning. The staff are so friendly, happy to engage in conversation and put themselves out to get you anyting you want. This really is a hotel to make you feel pampered and special.
The food is something else! The quality of the buffet was very high with different selections every night, including options to order from the kitchen. As an althernative, there is a bookable restaurant running different food themes throughout the week. The quality of the food was excellent and the service very attentive.
I hired a car so the hotel being out on a limb a little was a bonus as it did not suffer the hussel or business of (but fabulous) Funchal - the hotel runs scheduled buses daily into Funchal for the faint hearted that don't fancy hiring a car - alternatively Thomson's run a package of trips to see the whole of Madeira at a very reasonable cost.
I wasn't really sure what to expect with Madeira, particularly as it has a slight reputation as a resort for the elderly, but the island is incredibly beautiful with so many different terrains and the people are very very friendly. The weather does however have a mind of it's own and depending where on the island you are, you could experience a number of weather changes in one day, so take a selection of clothes, although I spent the week in t-shirts - not bad for Mid-October.
I personally cannot wait to go back!
brilliant hotel, food excellent(so much choice),staff superb(efficient genuinely friendly and willing to please). Cannot imagine staying anywhere else on the island. Would recommend to anyone.
xmas break now time for fat fighters and alcaholics anonamous
wow what a fab hotel, as someone who like to go self catering in a condo because of fear of noise and dodgy food we took a gamble with the rui. check in two seconds and a glass of maderian wine and a smile, room fab, quiet,. bbc itv and cnn bbc world clean room fab bath loveley view, little fridge bar, just take out there drinks and put in own if you want and replace when you leave the room. loads of room and so peaceful, carpeted rooms so no clippitty cloppitty noises from above. the foods very good even if you are veggie, i asked for dishes not on menu and got them. too much to eat not that it stopped us. now for breakfast......glasses of cava for breckie as much as you wanted fruit smoothies, coffee tea fruit ceareal omellets eggs meats fresh breads cheese it goes on and on and some more cava just to be polite. then walk out onto the terrace and look out to sea with another glass of cava of course..........bus to funchel 15 mins and free from hotel, great gym and pools and sauna. beware of the germans who like to go in starkers thank god i was still drunk from breakfast ....ahh maybe that why they gave us the free drink .................you wont want to go home up the hill in small village lots of small shops, restaurants etc and good supermarkets..can i go back please
We stayed here for a week before Christmas with my parents. The hotel and the staff were second to none.
The hotel was kept spotless, and the staff couldnt do enough for you. Hubby got told off for pouring his own wine buy the waitress. she was also laughing at the time as well though.
The food was very plentyful and of excelent quality, with choices to suit even the fussiest of people.
The free hotel bus is very good but if you want to have a good laugh try going on the local bus for an evening trip to Funchal. single 1.40 Euro each.
The only down side to the hotel that we could find was the fact that the daytime and evening entertainment was very poor.
Lovely hotel & staff, location not so good
My husband & I have just returned from a week @ the Riu Palce in Madeira. The hotel & staff were brilliant - all of staff so pleasant & helpful with very good english. Bit disappointed with the location - nothing much to see in Canico & not too enamoured with Funchal. We like to look around small trinket shops & there was a distinct lack of these anywhere on the island ( we did the West & East side tours). Island very green & pretty but we would't go back despite the quality of the hotel, food, staff.
Lovely Hotel, excellant staff
We have just returned from 1 weeks stay at the Riu Palace. Found the hotel to be in very good condition and very clean. We had half board and was very pleased to say that the food was excellent. Huge choice both at breakfast and dinner. You can choose to help yourself to the buffet or have dinner served at your table. Breakfast is help yourself. There are 2 sittings for dinner one at 6pm and the other 8pm. You are alloted one of these times when you arrive but they are very happy to accommodate you and will alter the times if you just let them know.
We didn't really see much of the hotels other facilities - we were out all day long seeing the island. There is an indoor pool and 2 outdoor pools. I would say that there isn't really much to do in the hotel unless you just want to soak up the sun. There is a keep fit room etc. There is entertainment every evening which we tried once and is was fine. Didn't find the cost of drinks unreasonable. There is a charge for the safety box in your room 15 Euros for a week.
The thing that really makes this such a lovely hotel is the staff. They really make you feel welcome. They all work well as a team and they are genuinely concerned that you have a really enjoyable time - especially the restaurant staff.
There is a hotel bus but if you really want to see the island at it's best then hire a car. The hotel bus runs about 3 times in the morning to Funchal the capital and takes about 15 mins. Coming back in the evening the latest bus is at 5pm - which isn't really late enough but you can always catch the local buses. The 155 express takes the same time and costs 1.5 euros per person. There is always the taxi - not sure of costs. Buses are limited on a Sunday.
Excellent all rounder
This hotel must be one of the best quality/value 4* hotels in Europe. Every aspect within the hotel's control eg rooms, food, staff, pools etc. is excellent.
For those wanting a sandy beach, bars, restaurents, shopping, go to Tenerife. For those wanting an island with great scenery, greenery and walks and a hotel in a quiet, sea front location, go to this hotel.
As well as the naked German sauna users - see earlier review - (the hotel is German owned and has an 80% German clientele) beware the mini bar checker, who is in your room almost before she has knocked!
