horarios do funchal (yellow local bus company) English website
by DeltaD
Due to a last minute alteration of an operation date we are able to go to Madeira for a stay next week.
Previously I have been able to access an English language version of the local bus company web site on the following http://www.horariosdofunchal.pt/en/ccr.asp
This is no longer available and I wonder if anyone knows a way of accessing it. I can get to the version in Portuguese but am too thick to comprehend in the language.
As an additional question - Do they still have the tourist 7 day ticket and what does it cost now please?

It looks like they recently 'improved' the website, and removed all the English...this seems to happen on a regular basis with some European transport sites...
"Bilhete de 7 dias - 15.10
Título individual, válido durante 7 dias, em qualquer carreira do serviço urbano, sem limite de viagens (ideal para turistas ou pessoas em tempo de férias)."
"Ticket for 7 days - 15.10 euro
Individual ticket, valid for 7 days, on any urban service, without a limit on number of trips (ideal for tourists or people on holiday)." (note: I am not a native Portuguese speaker, but I think I have the sense of it right).
Note that they also have 1 day, 3 day, and 5 days passes...see http://www.horariosdofunchal.pt/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65&Itemid=245
bom viaje!

Muito Obrigado Bill
The information on the tourist ticket is very welcome. Thr price has not gone up much in a year (apart from the £/Euro rate.
It really can be great value as the Town Buses cover a big area. I guess by now it will all be done on the Giro system

Travel Tips for Funchal
Funchal sidewalks
by salinhopt
Touring Funchal, one must observe the beautiful sidewalks in patterns of marble from the mainland and lava from the mountains. In spring the delicate lilac flowers of the jacaranda tree adorn Funchal's main roads, as the blooms emerge from the leaves.
Levada Dos Tornos
by sandysmith
It you want to enjoy an easy Levada walk not far from Funchal and visit a delightful tea house then the Levada Dos Tornos is a great choice. The walk is easy and only takes about 90 minutes. Take the number 29 yellow town bus to Curral dos Romeiros Terminus. Go up the steps to the levada and turn right, just follow the water and you can't go wrong and its well signposted along the route. It passes some delightful colonial style private houses - called quintas -on route too. After about 90 minutes you will see the sign for Jasmin tea houses with steps down to it on the left hand side).
To return to Funchal there is a bus stop right outside the front drive of the tea house - number 47 takes you back into town.
Saint Peter's Church
by salinhopt
This church dates originally from the 16th century. Although much of the building was actually completed during the 17th and 18th centuries, the church as we see it today is impressive, with its "mannerist" door, chairs dating from 1633 and a beautiful set of azulejo tiles from 17th and 18th centuries.
Also take the chance to visit Saint Peter's historical area.
Zarco's Statue
by sandysmith
In 1418 Jao Goncalves Zarco was caught in a storm whilst exploring the west coast of Africa and blown out to sea. He found safe landing at nearby island of Porto Santo but not before he noticed the wooded misty island of Madeira! Over the next few years Madeira was explored and cleard of wood for settlement and claimed for the Portugese.
In 1425 Zarco founded Funchal and his statue stands in the middle of the town centre not far from the cathedral.
Tropical Garden - Monte Palace
by MikeAtSea
Formerly a hotel, the Monte Palace and its garden were purchased by Jose Berardo and restored and opened to the public in 1989. The garden has a famous collection of ceramic tiles, oriental gardens and a number of water features. Plant collections include both indigenous and exotic collections. The size of the garden is 18 ha - with plenty of walk ways to explore the many exotic and tropical plants and flowers.
