I think this link can help you.

It's not too far from the docks.
It's on the right side of the map (says Market Old Town).

Walk to the other end of Funchal where the cable car is and it is just up the street from there. As you are probably taking the cable car anyway up to the toboggan rides, no problem.

From the harbour you turn right along the coast eastwards in the direction of the Sao Tiago Fort. You pass the marina and pier and walk along the boulevard (Avenida do Mar) another 400 meter. After passing the Praza da Autonomia you go about three blocks from the boulevard inland (200 m) along the Profetas and you will see the market at your right hand side.

Travel Tips for Funchal

Parks, gardens and green

by sachara

Funchal is a real green garden city.
There are a lot of small and large parks everywhere in town and many streets have nice flowering trees. Around the houses, estates and hotels you see also very nicily designed gardens with abundant sub-tropical trees and plants. I think the climate and the soil are really suitable for the most beautiful and fast growing gardens.
We are always surprised how much the plants have grown, when we return after one year. A real paradise for gardeners and landscape architects, like me.

Balconies

From the municipal town square, stand with you back to the town hall and head for the far right hand side corner. Walk up Rua C Pestana and along to Rua da Carreira at the next junction. in this street you will find many elegant original balconies on the upper storeys of the buildings- a real old part of Funchal. This pic shows the one at number 155 - one of the most detailed.

CHEAP TICKETS FOR LOCAL BUSES IN FUNCHAL.

by Tricky_Dicky69

If you are using local yellow buses in Funchal best value are the Duplo tickets which are valid for 2 journeys. The journeys do not have to be taken on the same route or even on the same day so they are really flexible.

A single journey paid for on the bus is 1 Euro 40 cents but a Duplo ticket is only 1 Euro 50 Cents and is therefore virtually half price. Duplo tickets can be bought at most newsagents, small shops or at kiosks on Avenida do Mar ( The harbour front )

You need to insert the ticket into the little machine by the driver as you board the bus. There are easy to read maps showing all routes on most bus shelters. These tickets are valid to visit the top of the cable car at Monte.

Santa Luzia Gardens - secret gardens

by Quillinglady

The Santa Luzia gardens are situated in the eastern part of Funchal. They have been transformed from what was the Sugar Factory. There are two items remaining from those days, the chimney and a wheel...the gardens are small, but lovely to sit and relax on a warm day. There is a small cafe in the gardens, where you can get a drink, cakes and a toasted sandwich.

It is a public garden, therefore its is free entrance.

Fortaleza do Pico

by Margrette

It is only fort on the hill, and is also know as Sao Jao Babtista Fort. It was build in 17century as at that time Island suffered a lot of pirates attacks. It is open to tourists daily. We had some trouble to find entrance:)It is hidden in a narrow alley. The view spreads out beautifly and you can see all Funchal underneath and off course the ocean. In the building there is also tiny historical exhibition with old paintings and short description of the fort. It is not far away from the centre and easy to find.
