Fabulous Cliff Bay
by TripAdvisor Member TotalTraveller
We stayed in the Cliff Bay for the first time in June 2006, going on the advice of friends who had been many years ago and highly recommended it. We certainly were not dissappointed. The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly throughout our stay. Our room was huge and overlooked the ocean and Funchal city - we were lucky enough to be blessed with good weather, so the views were incredible. We arrived on Saturday evening, and on our first night we were fortunate enough to have the best view in Funchal for the firework displays (held every Saturday night through the summer) - on our balcony! Everywhere was clean and tidy around the hotel and pools, and again the staff were excellent and attentive. The food was good, although my only criticism is that the prices in the restaurants were incredibly marked up. A bottle of Mateus Rose wine, for instance, was 19 EURO whilst restaurants in Zona Velha in Funchal it was 6 EURO (and in supermarkets it was 3 EURO!!). Overall the Cliff Bay was an extremely good hotel, and we would definitely stay there again if we returned to MAdeira (and I'm sure we will!)

Didn't spend the night in Madeira, but saw this beautiful five star Cliff Bay Resort hotel, and, I mean just look at it! I said 'This will be the place where I'll be staying next time I'm here!' :)
You just can't miss it!
One week in this hotel in a double room for two persons including breakfast and airport transfers would be about $1,110. So according to my calculations one night stay would be about $80 per person. But who would stay there just for one night!?
Best hotel ever stayed in. Just like a holiday shoud be.

We are two early retired couples, just returned from a week's stay at the Cliff Bay Hotel. We had a sea view room overlooking the gardens and pools, which was very spacious. The view was magnificent.
The hotel facilities are excellent. We stayed half board. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. Dinners were themed differently and interesting each night, something for everyone, very imaginative, wonderfully cooked and presented. An extremely high standard. We found the whole holiday very relaxing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was our first visit to Madeira but we shall definately be returning to stay at the Cliff Bay.We had a super week and would recommend the Cliff Bay to anyone. In fact it was the best hotel we've ever stayed in. We felt pampered all week.Wonderful, like a holiday should be.
perfection

We have just returned from another visit to The Cliff Bay . Certainly no problems with cleanliness or bedmaking in room . Could not hear any disco either Everything perfect from the view from our balcony, the fresh fruit and mineral water placed every day to the lovely weather. If the hotel food is not to some Trip Advisor's liking there is always McDonalds across the road.

Just arrived back from a wonderful, restful stay at the marvellous Cliff Bay Hotel. I am having withdrawal symptoms already. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. The staff were superb and forever helpful. The ambience was perfect and the facilities were out of this world. The food was delicious and the hotel is so near to other superb restaurants that you are absolutely spoiled for choice. The breakfasts were fantastic, complete with champagne!!!! Our room view was fantastic overlooking the harbour and I would suggest that upgrading to a seaview is definitely worth the money!!! We also had a lovely bouquet of flowers and a complimentary evening meal and a bottle of wine!! We will definitely return for a restful week without the kids!!!! PS the weather was also beautiful, as is the island of Madeira.
Very disappointed would not return

This was our second time at the Cliff Bay and we were greatly disappointed. The evening meal (buffet) was very average to poor, for the same price you could have a delicious meal at the Villa Cipriani (excellant Italian restaurant just along the street from the Cliff Bay). When we looked at their so called "fine dining restaurant" (don't bother the food although beautifully presented was tasteless) to choose our table we were challenged by the wine waitress who was extremely rude and more or less told us to get out!
We had to re-make our beds each day as the maid had made them so quickly and with little care. The sheets were in some cases too short and too narrow and would barely tuck in. The rooms although large were shabby and tired and the shower in the bathroom had black mould in between the tiles - it needed a good clean including the floor.
On our first night we had to move rooms because our room 844 was very noisy, sounded like a ship's engine was next door - we later found that the noise was from the kitchen fan(s) we were told the noise and vibration would cease at appprox 10.00 p.m.
We wouldn't return to this hotel it is not up the 5 star rating they are supposed to have.

My husband & I have just returned from a weeks stay at The Cliff Bay. What a wonderfull hotel were old fashion standards still matter.
When we arrived & checked in we were treated very well while our cases were delivered to our room. On opening the door of our bed room the veiw that greeted us from the window was truly breath taking, the room itself was pretty special too!
Hotel lovely. holiday lovely. Prices in the bar very expencive.
Basically this was pampering to a high degree

Location
2-3 miles from town and beach, pleasant walk down but uphill back
Resort
Attractive once past docks, especially the Old Town. Expensive
Beach
Pebbly in town, lido area better
Transport
Try to find out info before leaving UK, I think that there are carnets and specially priced tickets, but drivers/ticket offices were not helpful. But do use buses.
Hotel
Reception – Large airy area, queue when we got there but soon moved. Beautiful reception.
Bedrooms – We had free upgrade to sea-view; large rooms; king size bed; sitting area with coffee table, two lounge chairs and small settee. Bathroom had His & Hers wash basins with bathrobes and both shower and bath.
Basically this was pampering to a high degree and worth every penny of their quite expensive prices.
Food – Couldn’t afford to eat in hotel, but breakfast was a tour de force with champagne breakfasts served.
Pool – Didn’t use but there was an inside pool and two on beach, reached by elevator some 200 ft below hotel
Suitable for
All age groups but not many children to be seen. We saw one only.
Weather
Perfect hot but not too overpowering
Summary
From transfer from airport by private taxi this was an outstanding holiday, largely because of the Hotel, would try to take more excursions if we went again, book at Strawberry World in Lido area. Also beware of “Tourist Information” spots they are all time-share sellers, except one in town. Eat across road from Hotel at Restaurante Terrace D’Adjuda. Traditionally vegetables on the island are tinned and you will find overcooked veg at nearly all other restaurants, also they give a standard 10% discount which basically pays for the tip, also lots of freebies in sweets and liquors, very pleasant indulgence. Also varied reasonably priced Tourist menu. Or eat in Old Town if in town.

The Cliff Bay Hotel, spa day pass
by joodee91
Hi
We stayed at The Cliff Bay a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the spa. We are returning to madeira later this year although we will be staying elsewhere. We were wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to visit The Cliff Bay spa as a non resident of the hotel and if so, how much it costs.
Thanks in anticipation
