Don't miss the fantastic Tourist menu Euro 12.50

by Quillinglady about The Chancellor

The Chancellor restaurant is situated on Estrada Monumental, next to the Florasol Hotel and not far to walk from the Monumental Lido or Alto Lido hotels. They are open for lunch and dinner. If you select the tourist menu (current prices as in December 2007) are Euro 12.50. This includes an apertif of a glass of Maderian wine. Then you have a bread roll, a choice of soup (vegetables) or mixed salad. Then four choices for the main courses, pork, lamb cutlets, two fish dishes, one is the local fish served with banana, the other is tuna. The meat dishes have chips the fish comes with boiled potatoes. All main meals have a salad garnish, about a tablespoon of mixed vegetables and rice. After this you get desert, ice cream, caramel pudin (creme caramel), or fresh fruit salad. If you eat off the tourist menu then you are looking around at Euro 12 for a pizza and more expensive for fish and meat dishes. Both fish dishes, the one with banana and the tuna (atum) as it is done Maderian style in tomato and onion sauce...simply delicious.

volunteer programs

by janpetergeza

Hi, guys!
Do you know about the existence in Funchal of any volunteer organizations whose focus of interest is related to any of the following: social work, environment conservation. animal shelters? Is there a way of getting into touch with them and offering to work for them on a volunteer basis?
Thank you

I found these sites which may be of interest:

Animal Rescue(in Spanish...I suggest you email them):

The Funchal Rotary Club might be a good general contact point. They will probably know of other opportunities. There's a contact email on this page:

Travel Tips for Funchal

Carreiros do Monte

by sandysmith

Carreiros do Monte - the toboggan drivers in straw hats - much like venetian gondoliers in their straw boaters - have been pushing people downhill from Monte in a wicker basket on runners for over a hundred years now.

Sao Martinho

by salinhopt

Sao Martinho is a northern Funchal parish.
It's worth the visit to Sao Martinho old church and new church also. The gardens are well kept. It's a great place to relax and enjoy Funchal landscape.

The numerous small bar-retaurants

by myriam_c about The numerous small bar-retaurants

We have eaten very good meals at the small bar-restaurants that you will find in every city. They will mostly have a soup of the day and a few main dishes. We've had lunch in one of these small places in Funchal's city centre for only 6 (six) euro for two! We both had a big bowl of vegetable soup (which was a main course in itself), a softdrink and a glass of sweet madeira wine as a digestive.

Quinta das Cruzes

by 36waterfalls

A quinta in the 18th-19th century was a large mansion with grounds, mostly belonging to the wealthy British Colonists. They had Madeiran people working for them on the lands, for example in the sugarcane.

Quinta das Cruzes is 19th century and had a few different owners. The house is now open to the public and is a clean, light approach to all things that made up daily life at the quinta. The huge rooms are filled with British colonial furniture. And in the heavy beamed basement you'll find a silver collection and Portugese furniture. This space is massive and originally used to house the senhore's winecellars!
The garden has a special section for orchids and cyclads that's very pretty.

Opening times: Tues-Sat 10.00-12.30 and 14.00-17.30
Sun 10.00-13.00

Entrance fee: €2,50

No pics allowed inside (you need about 1 hour here)
