New Year's Eve 2008
by esteves354
My husband and I will be in Funchal on New Year's Eve and we would like to make reservations in advance for the evening that includes taking in the fireworks display. Any suggestions as to the best hotel locations and which hotels take online reservations for New Year's. Perhaps someone has a better idea of how New Year's could be best enjoyed in Funchal. Thank you.

If you are on a cruise ship for the evening, I would suggest staying put, you will have the best view.Unless you are staying in a hotel on the island where you can't see them from, many have spectacular views for the display, just make your way down to the harbour at about 9.00 and soak up the atmosphere, it will be crowded, the mood happy and it is great. The display begins at midnight and lasts for about 20 - 30 minutes. Two good locations for views from Hotels are the Panaramico Hotel which is up in the hills above the Lido area, and also Casino ,Cliff Bay and Carlton hotels, but most hotels along the main area have seafront views.
Travel Tips for Funchal
Beatles Boat

Strolling around the harbour area is very pleasant. There are numerous cafes here and the ex-Beatles yacht , the Vagrant, is moored here as a restaurant. You could have an elegant lunch here or a snack in one of the boat cafes alongside it.
Hiking - Our game plan strategy.
by Jerelis
Most people try to rush Funchal on a budget so they end up missing some of the highlights in a whirlwind. The key to seeing Funchal properly is a game plan, you must know what you want to see before setting out. Before we visited Funchal we saw on a city map that the small town of Funchal is divided into three district areas - the historical downtown, the Marina / Funchal Promenade and the residential areas in the hills. We visited the city three times, every time we hiked our way through one of the districts.
Our first hike was the area where the city is built against the stunning backdrop of the magnificent hills. It was quite strenious, but definately worth while! We had some beautiful views at the city and saw a number of very charming little quintas. While most tour guides don't recommend getting lost in the hills, this part of Funchal is the place to get hopelessly lost for half a day. We wondered off through mysterious and steep alleyways leading us away from the crowds. We ended up at Quinta Vigia, Santa Catarina Park, Fortaleza do Pico, Quinta das Cruzes, mazes of hilly backstreets and deserted gardens. The real Funchal? Have a look at our Funchal Packing List.
Wine Museum
by salinhopt
It's part of the Madeira Wine Institute building, visitors can see here an exhibition of prints, photography, objects and machines picturing the different phases of Madeira wine growing and production.
The Building has a wonderfull architecture.
Funchal Cable car
by salinhopt
From the steam train of ancient times to the most sophisticated cable car of today, Funchal is once again connected to the breathtaking beauty of Monte, which lies in the mountains above the city.
This is an exciting way to show Madeira's hidden beauty without any harm to the environment. The departure station is at the Parque Almirante Reis, located in the old part of the town. This station has good parking conditions, and fits in well with the renovation plans for the old part of the town, which is now almost complete.
The Monte Station is situated near Monte Palace Tropical Garden, at Caminho das Babosas and can receive up to 800 passengers per hour.
Flower vendors in the street
by sachara
The small square, Largo de Gil Eanes, just behind the Se cathedral, is the place were the women in traditional clothes sell flowers like orchids, lilies, roses and strelitzias.
The women wear colourful striped skirts, white shirts with a red jacket and yellow boots. sometimes they have a black cap (carapuca)
