Then go to www.viamichelin.com and enter under Driving Directions (you don't even need to change Europe to Portugal, it will find it with just the following):
- airport
- Funchal
- Avenida do Infante
- Funchal
and you will get a route plan. Although as it happens all you do is follow the R101 from the airport, and for some reason viamichelin will only show route to the centre of Funchal (9000), I couldn't make it give anything more specific whatever I tried: but then if you look at that and then the location map on the hotel's website, I think you can see very well where you would be.

Travel Tips for Funchal

Madeira was discovered by a navigator called João Fernandes Zarco. So, it's without any surprise that we see his statues in evidence, in the historical centre of the city. Two styles, two tastes, the same respect!

Hiking - "Zona Velha", the Old Area.

by Jerelis

Take time to meander - losing yourself in the maze of alleys, streets and lanes is one of the "Zona Velha", the Old Area's principal pleasures. Throughout the Zona Velha we saw the curious mixture of architectural styles left by the previous inhabitants of the islands - Venetians, British and French. The streets wind and wander with no discerrible order or object. Picturesque cobblestone alleyways are interspersed by statues, graceful churches, fountains and a great selection of local cafés where we had our lunch and by the end of the day had a nice cold beer.

The Zona Velha is about 500 years old. Because of its dependence of its defences and the mountains in the back, it was forced to develop within their narrow confines. The development in the area of this town, therefore, was very limited. So ... do meander, because the cluster of sights around Praça do Municipio are hearthclutchingly beautiful, but the more secret pleasures of the hushed backstreets are just entrancing. All this may seem very though as finding your way in Funchal might be difficult, but in really distances are short and the signs will help you in getting around. Enjoy! Formosa Beach

by salinhopt

The beach Praia Formosa, situated in the capital Funchal, just 10 minutes drive from the city centre, offers visitors three small sandy beaches. In the summer, this beach attracts all kinds of sea and beach lovers, not only because of the sea and the sun, but also because of the sports activities, contests and nightlife that it offers.
The water quality is certified by the ?Blue Flag? and a team of lifeguards is watching over the safety of the bathers.

Porto Santo

I visited Porto Santo for a day, you can book tickets for the Porto Santo Line they have an agency in Funchal, I?m sure someone will point you in the right direction in Funchal. You catch the boat early and it takes 2 and a half to 3 hours on this boat, refreshments can be bought on board. You finally reach Porto Santo to see a long beach and beautiful clear waters, which is walking distance from the boat, but you can take a bus, taxi or even horse drawn carriage, they?re all waiting for you when you get off the boat. The beach is never packed and you can pick your spot along the 5 mile long beach. It?s lovely for a relaxing day on a relaxing quiet beach.

I would recommend bring your own drinks as I found it hard finding anywhere to buy a drink that wasn?t a trek from the beach.

You can also bring you car and explore the small island, you?d have to check that when booking tickets.

Mercados dos Lavradores

The covered "worker's market" in Funchal is a riot of colour and smells. Buit in 1930's for the locals to sell their produce its now a popular scene to experience in Funchal. Here your eyes will be fascinated with the colour all around, you can taste exotic fruits (a popular one is a cross between a pineapple and a banana) and smell the fish! Its a good place to buy produce if you are self catering in Funchal.
