Will be arriving at Madeira airport on 4 October before noon. What are the options of getting to the Lido area by public transportation? The Dorisol Hotels have a free shuttle service to the city. I'm wondering if I and my suitcase could get to one of these hotels from the city? I would stay at one of these hotels. Should I stay in the city and bus to the ocean area? Also wondering if the Lido area will be deserted,at this time of year? Obligado.
There is an Aerobus which leaves the Airport frequently from outside arrivals and goes near the Dorisol Hotels. The cost is €5 per person each way.Tell the driver the name of your hotel and he will get as close as he can. Madeira is an All round resort so it will definately not be deserted.

The ascent to Monte is mandatory - great views, great gardens, and... the chance to descend in a sliding basket.
All day long, a truck carries uphill the baskets that two men control descending almost two kilometers in ten minutes with two tourists bouncing between pleasure and fear.
To go up there's a funicular, and the descent costs 25€.
The old and historic mansion that holds the collection dates back from the early origins of colonisation and was probably used by the first Donee Generals and their successors as their official residence. The landscaped garden that holds the manor estate spreads over 1 hectare of very valuable land in the centre of Funchal. We were amazed by the beautiful items the Quinta das Cruzes Museum had to offer! When we walked around in our own pace we saw parts of a sunken Dutch sailing ship. Right at that time Mara (the woman who led us in and already understood that we were Dutch) was curious about what some Dutch maps said and Relinde and I were just having fun translating it and talking about it with Mara.
As a sort of ‘thank you’ Mara gave us a personal guided tour. She showed us the fine collection of silver, filigree and antiques that are the legacy and collection of the private collector César Gomes. After that we saw porcelain, furniture of rare woods, glazed pottery, marble, cutlery and many other household ornaments. Some of the furniture on display are valuable examples of renaissance through to romantic craftsmanship and woodwork: Mara told us all about the cabinets and chests made from the excellent wood caixas de açucár (sugar boxes) found on the island dating from the seventeenth century, Indo-Portuguese desks dating from the sixteenth century and many other English and Portuguese style furniture dating from between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Finally Mara learned us that the museum opened in 1952 as one of the most prestigious and well kept museums of Madeira and we did (and still do) believe her!

From outside you might think this is just a normal grocery but when you enter and pass the actual grocery's room, you enter a small bar where you can have different kinds of fruits, fruit salads, and ice creams with fruit salad.
Do you know those moments, usually in the afternoon, when you get suddenly hungry and you dream about something quick and tasty? Right in the middle of one of these moments I peeked in this frutaria and I found the place for me!
It's quite cheap, a big fruit salad is less than 2€ an ice cream scoop is 1€. Fruit salads with icecream
In the 18th century an English consul bought a property in the outskirts of Funchal and transformed it into a beautiful estate, the Quinta do Prazer (Pleasure Estate). More than a century later the estate has been transformed to a palacelike residence and was later on converted in the Monte Palace Hotel.
In 1987 the Monte Palace Hotel has been sold to an entrepreneur who reforested the palace gardens with exotic plants, native to various countries (proteas from South Africa, heathers from Scotland, azaleas from Belgium!!) and indigenous plants from the Madeira woods. He also created a Japanese garden and put koi fish in the lakes.
