Distance between the cruise terminal and Santa Catarina park

by holdenprice

I am going on a cruise soon, and the liner will be docking at the cruise terminal in Funchal. I fancy visiting the Santa Catarina Park. Please can anyone tell me how far the park is from the terminal, and how long would it take to walk the distance. Any directions (by foot) would be appreciated. Thank you. Mandy from South Wales.

I would try to look at the Funchal page and go to the like to google earth. And have a look for how long the walk seems to you. As I remember its not to far but I love to walk.

Welcome to VT ;-)

We did a port stop there in March 2006. The cruise ship dock is on a little spit of land directly across from downtown. You have to make a big "U" walk to get from the ship to downtown. It is a level and easy walk with plenty of places to stop, look, eat, and drink. I don't know where Santa Catarina Park is located, but it took us about 45 minutes of easy walking to get to the base of the cable car.

Hi there Mandy. The walk from the habour to the Santa Catarina Park is definetly not longer than about 10 minutes. If you need to orient yourself from the habour then I suggest you look at a map of Funchal. Try this site:

An Old Friend

by seagoingJLW

The first time we went to Madeira, we found a lovely little shop in which we bought gifts for family and friends. The proprietess was nice to us, offering us Madeira, and going beyond what most shopkeepers do. I took a photo of her with my husband. When we returned to Madeira two years later, my husband walked into the shop, up to the counter and placed the photo on the counter in front of the woman, saying Do you recognizr this woman?' She gasped and replied, 'Why, that's me.' We had a lovely return visit and some more Madeira wine.

Fortaleza do Pico - Baroque gilded carvings.

by Jerelis

When the population of Funchal expanded and its trade turned the city into a busy port, it came prone to violent attacks of mostly pirates. Therefore it needed citywalls to protect itself. A number of fortifications were built and one that is still standing in Funchal is Fortaleza do Pico in the west of the city. Like we already said before, it stands at a hill on the far end of a steep climb through narrow streets. After the strenious hike up the hill we arrived at a huge gate, we still weren’t there … we still had some metres to go! (Tip: it's a 40 minutes walk from the citycentre and you'll pass Museu F. de Freitas and Quinta das Cruzes on your way up!). But once we arrived at the actual fortress we found out that the main building was not open to the public. Ghee, we must admid that it was a bit of a disappointment, because we were very curious on seeing this beautiful castle on the inside. But anyway, there was still more than enough to admire at the outside.

We could enter the rather small courtyard in front of the fortress and have a walk around it. There was also enough room to have a good look at the defensive walls. Right there we read that they started to built this magnificent place in 1622 and the first parts of Fortaleza do Pico (mainly the defence walls) were finished in 1632. The castle itself lasted a bit longer, because of the Spanish intermezzo, untill 1640. The main building has some beautiful tiles and Baroque gilded carvings, both of the 17th century.

Calcado do Pico, Funchal.

The fortess is visible and reachable from Quinta das Cruzes.

Sailing Trips

by sandysmith

Down at Funchal harbour many sailing and deep sea fishing tours are advertised - also trips to see the dolphins. we didn't manage time to do any of these but the one that caught my eye was a half day sailing on the Santa Maria de Columbo- a replica of Christopher Columbus's galleon - built only in 1998 and exhibited first at the Expo in Lisbon. Don't be fooled by the sails though - there's also a motor on board!

View from the Cable Car

by MikeAtSea

In the beginning one simply seems to be touching the roofs of the houses of Funchal as one slowly makes the way up the hill. After a few minutes one gets higher and the view to the left over the entire city of Funchal is spectacular. There is a small opening that allows to take photographs without the reflection of the glass.

Museu Municipal and Museu da Quinta das Cruzes

by sachara

Directly west and north of the church of Sao Pedro we visited two museums.
At the corner of the Rua de Mouraria the Museu Municipal in a mansion of the 18th century, with many balconies and windows. This museum has a large aquarium, an ethnographical and a natural-historical section.
North of the Museum Municipal is the Museu da Quinta da Cruzes with decorative art, furniture and antiques.
For the entrance of the Quinta da Cruzes we saw some beautiful trees.
