European Region of the Year 2004!
by Jerelis
The European Region of the Year is an initiative which aims to increase knowledge and recognition of European regional affairs, to make new contributions to regional construction and European integration and, finally, to project the regions designated as European Region of the Year onto the European and international scene, in all their aspects, such as the social, cultural, economic and tourism aspects. The initiative has certain similarities to the European Capitals of Culture, but at regional level.
Every year, two regions are designated as European Region of the Year, regions which must belong to different countries, as is the case of the Balearic Islands (Spain) and the Republic of Karelia (Russia), European Region of the Year 2003, or Kiev (Ukraine) and Piedmont (Italy), European Region of the Year 2005. Any region of the 45 member countries of the Council of Europe may apply to be designated as European Region of the Year. The Autonomous Region of Madeira (Portugal) and the German-speaking Community (Belgium) will begin their tenure of the title European Region of the Year 2004 on 1 January, taking over from the Republic of Karelia (Russia) and the Balearic Islands (Spain).
Madeira will start its tenure as European Region of the Year with a grand fireworks display on New Year’s Eve, at midnight, to see in the New Year.
Maritimo Funchal
by Vincedem
The stadium in Funchal is just next to the tourist area called 'Lido'... So if you are a football fan and on a holiday in Madeira. It's maybe worth to check out if Maritimo doesn't play at home and if you're lucky you could see games against Benfica, Porto or Sporting!
The atmosphere in the stadium is nice and non-violent!
Farmers Market tiles

This is a centre point for the town. It typifies the architectural period known as the New State (Estado Novo). The facade has a panel of tiles in a semi-circle, two tiled panels at the main entrance and several others in the section devoted to fish.
Pasteleria's
by myriam_c about Pasteleria's
Do have lunch or afternoon tea at a pasteleria. It's a bakery shop where you can sit and have coffee or tea with sandwiches, stuffed croissants, scones, cakes, gateaux, ice cream and much more.
We've tried a few and they were all excellent!
Cathedral Interior
by sandysmith
The interior of the cathedral is quite dark too - i found it difficult to pick out the carved wooden ceiling - need more light and binoculars to see the animal and flower designs up there. The main thing of interest to me was the choirstalls. Here the apostles are painted in gold, which against the blue was a good contrast, and garbed as prosperous Maderian sugar merchants! The underside of the choir seats also have inticate carvings - such as monkey and pigs.
