Funchal Nightlife...?

by alexweiss

I am going to Funchal in August with my sister, 21 and friend, 20. Where are the best nightclubs? and do we have to pay to get in?
Thanks

There are several clubs and night spots to visit. Some you would have to pay, but a free drink is included and others not. For more information on Madeira Nightlife see:

There is Copacabana Disco is inside the Casino. It was nice when i was there!
There are also 3 discos one of them called Vespas, by the port that are pretty nice also. You can move from one to another without paying entrance fee!

Travel Tips for Funchal

Funchal Promenade

by sandysmith

A lovely tree-lined promenade runs from the commercail port of Funchal right down to the fortess at the other end. Soon the commercial port will be moved to the next town down the coast which I will imagine will allow for greater expansion of the harbour for the tourists.

The "Levadas"

by salinhopt

In addition to the natural beauties of Madeira, the region offers a man-made wonder in the shape of the traditional irrigation system of Levadas. These are ideal for the walker.

The Levadas represent living testimony to our ancestors’ efforts to bring fertility to the steep mountainsides and valleys by diverting the abundant sources of water that would otherwise cascade uselessly from the mountaintops. These Levadas represent the arteries in a vast circulation system that permitted the otherwise arid soil to be actively cultivated and people to settle up in the island’s highest regions.
Normally cut trench wise into the ground, the Levadas have also been cut directly into living rock, and built over rocky clefts or sheer precipices hundreds of metres deep. Others delve under mountains by means of tunnels hundreds of metres long. They cover the island from north to south with an extension of 100 km (62 miles).
Tracing the route of these Levadas on foot allows walkers to enjoy the very best island views, to recharge their batteries through contact with nature, and at the same time to contemplate the links between Man and Nature, and his efforts to tame its forces.

Sightseeing Bus

by sandysmith

There is a sightseeing bus which tours around Funchal in a half day - you can get on and off at the various stops on route and pick it up again. It cost about 7.50 euros (2003) and your ticket was valid on the local busues for the rest of the day too. Funchal centre is easily explored on foot but if you wanted to travel a bit further out of town to one of the gardens then its not bad value.

Go Tobogganing

by reenby

Take the cable car up to Monte to visit the garden. When you are finished dont take the cable car back down. Instead go into the little town and find the toboggans at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the Nossa Senhora do Monte Church

The toboggans were originally a fast route downhill for those with money. Now its a fun ride downhill for the tourists.

You get deposited at the bottom of the hill and have to walk back into town, but its not a long walk and the ride is worth it.

Wine festival

by juzz

Evey year in september the wine festival brings music, food and of course wine in the centre of Funchal.
I didn't actually enjoy their folk music and dances but I did definitely appreciate stalls with strong madeira wine for 1€, other kind of nice wine and typical rolls with spicy meat (called something like bolo do Carne de Vinha d' Alhos).
