Bus Services in funchal

by mocall

Dear forun,
I have twice stayed in Vlia Teresinha on Rua das Cruzes,
it is quite a steep climb from Aveida do Mar. Just as
I was leeving Last year I was informed that there was
a Bus Service that ran along Rua das Cruzes I never saw
this bus. Can someone advise me of the service No, full
route, & stopping places please. this climb is nothing
for the young & fit, but I am now 72 yrs old and this bus
would be a God Send.
I have booked again arriving February
If you know of this bus please respond
Seasonal Greetings
mocall

For Funchal bus route map, click on mapa da rede on here http://www.horariosdofunchal.pt/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=161 (or ask the Villa Teresinha people where is the nearest bus stop and which buses serve it..). Otherwise, I can only suggest you click on "carreiras urbanas" (top right) and investigate each of the routes - there aren't that many - to see if you recognise any of the stops listed, many of which are named for specific hotels.

The only bus that might go trought Rua das Cruzes (according to the map of Horários do Funchal) is number 50. However it doesn't go to Av do Mar or any place downtown.

Travel Tips for Funchal

Autonomy

by solopes

Madeira has cleverly used the opportunities provided by the menace of independence to gather from the continent the money needed to its development. Aimed to tourism, most investments were done combining efficiency wit beauty, with respect for nature and history.
Natural harmony is dominant, but I think that autonomy deserved a bigger monument

Folklore shows

by sandysmith

Folklore shows of dancers in their colurful costumes often take place in the hotels for evening entertainment. We can across this impromptu performance in the botanical gardens and it was fun to see it in such a setting. I think they were practicing or teaching newcomers.

Quinta das Cruzes Museum - Donation philanthropist

by Jerelis

Quinta das Cruzes Museum was a place we wanted to visit whenever we would visit the city of Funchal. We read in our travel book that this museum was the former residence of João Gonçalves Zarco, who discovered Madeira in 1419. The museum should house many fine examples of English furniture and China-trade porcelains brought to Madeira by expatriate Englishmen in the 18th century. The surrounding park was of botanical interest and contains a noteworthy collection of orchids. So it was time for us to hike the steep hill towards it and see it for ourselves!

When we arrived at the beautiful manson we immediately saw why this "Manor Estate of the Crosses" museum is considered one of the most prestigious and well-kept museums of Madeira. Unfortunately we were told that the entrance was free, but that was only for the garden, so we paid about €2,20 per person and walked our way in. We received a small hand-out for our own ‘not guided’ tour and read that “The combined donations of 2 philanthropists reveal a remarkable and awesome collection of some uniquely Madeiran relics and antiques. The collection is exemplary and special in that it helps portray the old Madeiran social life at its best. It educated us to understand the etiquette customs of the 16th through to the 19th centuries on Madeira. It showed us in typical fashion the way any fine lord or gracious nobleman would have lived on the island.” We were the only one present and trully had the time on our hands, just to walk around in our own pace. That was just great!

A good restaurant near the centre.

by pedroinlondon about A Soleira

We noticed the restaurant while walking towards the centre and the menu seemed ok. The staff is very welcoming and attentious and the food was good, even though I thought the amount was less that what is usual for Madeira. I had a good tuna steak and it was nice, and in the end the waiter gave us a taste of Madeira wine. I would return if I were in the area, but wouldn't really travel far for it.

Market Day

by ettenaj

What a lovely suprise seeing all the wonderful fruits and vegatables all laid out in this fabulous openair building, with its fish stalls below. Do try on the traditional wolly hats, they are a must.
