A great trip!

Contrary to many of the recent negative reports we have just experienced a most wonderful stay at the Pestana Grand. We were most impressed by the standard of the rooms and the staff in particular, the General Manager who was always at hand to talk to. Having visited five star establishments around the world we found this modern hotel to be up there with the best of them. It was unpretentious and we felt that we could relax around the pool and bar areas. We met such lovely people who helped make our holiday so very special-Jimmy and co.

We had our best meal in the Italian-the lasagne was beautiful!!! Had another great meal near the rocks-Fish restaurant.

A relaxing holiday just what the doctor ordered. Enjoy!!!

Not 5 star service

by TripAdvisor Member Laskarina

Just returned from a week's stay at the Pestana Grand and were quite disappointed. We travel extensively and although our room was 5 star standard, the service level very definitely wasn't. One day the maids didn't leave towels - we rang up and asked but heard nothing for several hours. On arrival we'd rung with an order for drinks to fill the minibar. This took 6 hours and many phone calls. The receptionist admitted that they didn't really have enough staff.

The spa area is very nice, but when the manageress is not there was used by a lot of people who weren't staying in the hotel.

The pool bar had excellent service, but we found the service in the Italian and Atrium restaurants very slow.

There is still some noise from neighbouring building works.

a lovely hotel

by TripAdvisor Member janetsteps

My boyfriend and I are both in our early thirties and have just spent a lovely week at the Pestana Grand. Along with no doubt alot of people i was a bit nervous of what to expect regarding the building work but to be honest it didnt upset our holiday at all. Yes, you can hear some noise whilst sitting by the pool, but not enough i felt to ruin the peace and relaxation factor. I would however, strongly recommend that if you can afford to get a sea view room, do, it is definatly worth the extra money. 1. to be away from the building work and 2. the view is incredible!!

The hotel is very clean well maintained with the restaurant providing a beautiful buffet breakfast...i have to say though, we had a dreadful meal in the Morrocan Restaurant! However, the barbeque night was great and there is a restaurant in Funchal called SOLAR D'AJOU, which does the most fantastic steak on the stone at a cheap price! I cannot recommend it highly enough! Find it and eat there!!!! Possibly one of the best meals out i have ever eaten!

Back to the hotel, all in all very impressed definatly a five star hotel with a lovely pool and it shouldnt be blamed for the work going on around it.

The Grand is grand

We have just spent the first week of November at the Pestana Grand, Funchal and had a lovely holiday. We had sea views with balcony furniture I would like to have brought home and the corridors were very quiet. Our room was very comfortable and the lighting was well thought out. Our room was slightly larger than our friends (room 1114 was larger than 1118)which meant we had a separate shower whereas they didn't. The shower was excellent and there was a good shaving/make-up mirror in the bathroom. I liked the fact that the fridge was for our own use and we could order drinks to put in it if we wanted. Tea and coffee with kettle were provided but you had to buy your own milk from the supermarket down the road. The staff were very friendly and our one request for attention to the slow drainage in the bathroom was dealt with immediately. The pool(s) were lovely (dressing gowns and towels provided) and although it was warm it wasn't really sunbed weather but there were plenty around the pool. We were able to sit outside every morning for the excellent buffet breakfast. The evening entertainment and bar prices were acceptable but we did occasionally feel that the time-share guests (top 2 floors) were a little overbearing. We were invited to inspect the time-share opportunity with a small reward if we took the tour but decided it wasn't for us. We took advantage of the meal deal which was 99 euros for 3 evening meals in a choice of the hotel restaurants including half a bottle of wine per person and water. The Italian restaurant saw us twice because the food was so good (garlic prawns - delicious) and the staff very attentive. The 3rd meal was 'steak on the stone' where we had a choice of cuts of steak. It was a buffet starter, steak with jacket potato and a selection of dips and a 'help yourself' sweet. Superb. There is a hotel bus which takes you into Funchal and returns at certain times but if you miss this the taxis are very reasonable - 7 euros to the Marina. The walk to/from Funchal takes about an hour mostly on promenade but some of it on a busy road. There is a very nice promenade to walk from the hotel which takes you to local restaurants and the supermarket not far away but be wary of the uneven pavements and hilly sections. The walk down steps to Praia do Formosa is quite steep and be careful of the last step with the drainage grid on it just outside the restaurant - I saw 2 people fall there at different times. One restaurant to be aware of is the Monumental Grill on the main road from the hotel. The food is very good but the waiters are such good salesmen that when you get the bill you realise you have spent much more than you intended. The atmosphere in the fish restaurant next to the supermarket is good and a superb selection of fresh fish is on show. One thing I haven't yet mentioned is the building work going on around the hotel. It didn't bother us and they seem to be getting to the end of it. As someone said it would be difficult to stay anywhere in Funchal and not have building work close by.

Fantastic Hotel

Stayed here from 17th to 26th September 2005. The rooms are very clean and the maid service is excellent. They dont hassle you to clean room but always manage to do an efficient job.

The Pool is fantastic - very clean, spacious and what a fantastic view overlooking the atlantic ocean. Drinks are also very reasonable and not a rip off. (I also thought very reasonable in the bar at night too).

We ate at the Moroccan and Italian and both meals were excellent. They were more expensive than in town but not overly so and a real treat!

Breakfast buffet was included in our deal and was also excellent - A choice of pancakes, eggs, beans, mushrooms, potatoes, yoghurts, cerials....and best of all we ate outside in the sunshine with a view of the atlantic every morning.

There is a bus into town - but we used taxis as it only cost 7 euros. There is also a loads of shops nearby with macdonalds, supermarket, clothes shops etc.

Finally, the building works - we were as close as you could be to them and didnt find them a problem at all. You could not hear anything in our room and the noise by the pool was minimal - there was the occasional crane whirring noise but to honest....there is so much building work going on in Madeira that i reckon you wouild get this at most hotels.

I would definately reccomend this hotel - it is especially good value for the price and we had a very relaxing time there.

I would not hesitate to stay here again - the staff were very helpful and polite.

Lovely hotel but....

by TripAdvisor Member UkMarty

Probably worthy of all the good comments already stated by other reviewers, especially the pool, rooms and view. What made it even more appealing was the availability of the sunloungers, free towels and parasols - no fighting for them at 6am! Even during peak times the pool attendedant provided more parasols. But there were some issues: there is building work surrounding the hotel. It is not intrusive but you do hear the noise of the cranes which start at 8am and continue all day. There is also a lot of building work on the road leading to the hotel which is quite unsightly. The website for the Pestana indicates that "every unit comes with separate shower cubicle and bath". Well my room didn't! Although this wasn't a problem to us it could have been to a less mobile person. Finally, we had a theft from our room during our stay. My partner left a small rucksack on the bed when we went out (with the room secured); it contained a small amount of money, sunglasses and lighter. We believe the theft took place when the room was being cleaned (not the maid but a passing opportunist thief). When we returned it was missing. The hotel management initially did not believe us, but it turned up - minus money, dumped behind the stage. We did take photographs of the rooms with doors wide open and unattended while being cleaned - so be aware!! I would recommend this hotel for its sheer luxury but certainly our holiday was spoilt by these events. Another word of warning - take plenty of sunscreen, maderia does get very hot!

Fantastic hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

The hotel was amazing! It all looks completely new and each room has been very thoughtfully designed. The pool area was the highlight - huge pool which was never busy so easy to swim. Gym area and spa were also highlights, as was the steak on a stone, which I would definitely recommend.

I would definitely go back to the hotel, but probably wait a year or so as the only (smallish) downside was the building works going on on each side of the hotel. This was only a minor irritation, but it meant we didn't really use our balcony due to the noise, and that from time to time we noticed the noise whilst sitting by the pool.

It is also worth noting that I booked this hotel partly on the management response dated 30 June 2005: "After August we can safely confirm that the project is nearing completion and you will have no problems at all." This is not true I am afraid.

Pestana October 2005

by TripAdvisor Member MarkDM112

We stayed here from the 10th-17th October.

The hotel is very nice - lovely breakfasts, excellent location - a one hour walk into Funchal - at medium walking pace.

Definitely worth 5 stars - room service food is excellent, the pool is excellent indoor and outdoor.

Building works are nearing completion and not too much of a nuisance - can not be heard inside the room or hotel.

Must mention the type of visitor - definitely for older people - we are young and felt out of place - but not uncomfortable - having said that - it was very quiet and if you want a peaceful break stay here. The only other younger people were Portuguese and very few.

In summary lovely island and if you do one thing - hire a car and see the island - the treacherous roads are worth it!
