Dear fellow VT, for health reasons, I am planning to spend some time in Funchal, this heaven on earth, however, my budget only allows me to spend a limited some of money on accomodation. I envisage spending in Funchal at least 1 year.
Please help me with concrete suggestions. Many thanks.

I have just joined the forum as my husband and I want to go for a year next summer, but finding reasonable priced rented property is proving hard to get.

Funchal was declared a city on the 21st of August 1508, by means of a letter from D. Manuel I. Funchal is the main commercial, cultural and tourism centre for all the Madeira archipelago. Funchal was certainly the first settlement following the occupation of the islands in 1430.
You should remember that even in such a sunny place as Madeira it rains sometimes:)few meters above sea level it is fine, but when you go hiking in the mountains the weather is more hursh. Rain coat must be on your list:) When it is shiny at one side of the island at the same time it rains and blows with a strong wind on the other. So favourite blouse or sweater also need to be packed:) And I don't need to mention about good firm boots when you go climbing and hiking:)))and obviously a backpack. Beaches are mostly stony (there are some sandy too but rare) so it is good idea to have a shoes that you can swim in, or just get into a water. If you like fishing you can take your fishing rod. I do not know if it is needed or how to get a licence for fishing though.
If you are planing to drive around the island don't forget your driving licence:)))
This is not really off the beaten path as its right on the main road going into Funchal but I was surprised to hear that not many people noticed the Toyota car showroom. Whats so special about it - well its all the lovely blue and white tiles decorating its walls - inside and out - depictiing scenes of old Maderian life. Definitely worth a look before you cross the road to Blandy's wine shop and lodge.
Nice restaurant, good food and friendly waiters. We had two main dishes and water for about 12€ per person. Espetada, beef skewer (though it wasn't onto a bay leaf stick as the typical espetada should be).
Sled Riding in Madeira, one would not quiet imagine, since the climate is so warm that one does not get snow. However the locals have created a fun way to get back down from the hill into town - by sled. A wooden sled accompanied by two "drivers" slides down the polished streets with rocket speed in full traffic... It is a fun way to get down the hill and a must for even the not so adventurous travelers!
