Handicapped tours

by Deeroy

Are there vehicles that accommodate mobility scooters in Funchal? Are there wheelchair accessible tours?

Re: Handicapped tours

by qaminari

I think it is extremely doubtful that any of the organised tours are wheelchair accessible, let alone for mobility scooters, and many Funchal sights are not wheelchair accessible anyway, e.g. botanical gardens, but see http://www.globalaccessnews.com/lisbonmadeira2000.htm.
Local taxis can do tours and should be able to provide an appropriate taxi, try http://www.madeirataxis.com/frontpage/index.php, http://www.danielmadeirataxis.com/index.php?p=dmt, others on http://www.noonsite.com/Countries/Madeira/Funchal/?rc=ShoreServices

I think as a generalization, you will find Europe, especially the older and historical parts of the towns far less accessible, than places in North America. Castles, churches, and in Funchal's case, wine lodges, were never designed with wheelchairs, scooters, etc. in mind. To add to the problem Funchal (and Madiera in general) is extremely hilly, so I would be concerned about the ability of electric scooters to handle the terrain.

Travel Tips for Funchal

Funchal pleasures

by salinhopt

It is a pleasure to wander the cobbled streets of Funchal, to visit wonderful gardens, to shop local items or international branded goods in the many stores. Or simply to soak up the magic of the pleasant avenues in the old city centre. Don’t forget to buy some of Madeira’s famous embroidery work.

My new Hobby

by Bendokan

Snorkeling to find Lapas. Lapas are a sort of clams that live on the rocks in the ocean. Once every two weeks we go to the rocky shores with our bags and gear. We also bring some charcoal and have a little nature BBQ. It's nice to end the day by drinking from one of the natural springs.
Optional you can take a harpoon with you and try to catch some fish to throw on the BBQ. A crab is easily caught too.
But you need a license to harpoon... but keep the beach clean * Mask
Tube
diving bag
Knife

Babosas

by salinhopt

Wander through the gardens to the Babosas panoramic view point stopping along the way at the famous Monte church where the last Austrian-Hungarian emperor, Karl I lies buried. His name is intimately linked to the neighbourhood, because he lived for a number of years at Monte Villa (Quinta do Monte).

Big portions of Cake!

by sandysmith about Boutique Lido

Ok here's the cake ..the coffee was good too with even more cream piled on top! Cost was about 7 euros for two coffees and cakes - there was a good selection too.
They also did a sandwhich service - we ordered filled rolls for our journey home - they were freshly made and wrapped in foil for us. I enjoyed them much more than the airline food we wisely decided not to have.

Jardim Botânico

by myriam_c

This garden is a beautiful range of colors on varioius levels. In fact there are a few dozens of small gardens in one large garden setting. A huge collection of cactus and succulents, but also trimmed English-like gardens, many varieties of orchids. And there's a beautiful view on the canyon of Ribeira de João Gomes.
Adjacent to the Jardim Botânico, and with the same entrance ticket, you can visit the Jardim dos Loiros (parrot garden) that has a big collection of parrots, macaws, parakeets, etc. The birds are in cages, and the cages are not really big. So if you don't like birds in cages you better don't go.
