Easter Monday

by sparkieplug24

Hi I am going on a cruise and one of the ports of call is Funchal unfortunately this is also Easter Monday. I was just wondering if this means that everything will be closed up. Also I was looking for advice on what are the best places to visit what are the must see places. There are five of us two pensioners, a 17 year old a 27 year old and a child of 6. We will be in funchal for around 7-8 hours any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Dear Donna,

Do not worry …. on Easter Monday there are places that will be still open for you to visit …. such as shops, restaurants, etc.

There is much to see .... unfortunately that you only have 9 hours. I would suggest two options:

A. Charter a (large) taxi. Ask first how much it costs for a trip around Funchal, and to Cabo Girão, Camara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol. If you do not have problems getting car sick, then ask the cab driver to take the old road instead of the new highways.
B. Go to the Zona Velha of Funchal (Old Town), take the cable car up to Monte, and visit the Tropical Garden, surroundings of Monte and the church. After that you can take the local bus back to the centre of Funchal.

Sometimes the cruise-ship has arrangements with local agents on the island which offers trips. You can collect some information on the web about Madeira:

http://del.icio.us/madeira
http://madeira.eigenstart.nl

... and then choose a trip on board. Please do not wait till the last moment in booking aboard ... because otherwise it makes it difficult to organize things on the island (my wife works for a local travel organization).

I hope this information helps you ...

Take care and .... I whish you happy seasons.

Cumprimentos,

Don Amaro

Travel Tips for Funchal

President's Palace

by sandysmith

The President of Madeira resides in Funchal. By all accounts he is a very nice man and well thought of, having done much to improve the country - they seem to have an abundance of schools and hospitals here! Also the road network is constantly improving with new roads and tunnels being built to improve commuting time for the locals. A trip over to the north of the island takes about 50 minutes now as opposed to the former 5 hours via twisting mountain roads. The downside is that Madeira is slowly but surely turing into swiss cheese with all holes being drilled into its hillside!

Fortaleza do Pico - View over Funchal!

by Jerelis

We almost have forgotten to mention that the entrance is free. But it's not an understatement just to mention that we needed no longer than half an hour up there. Because we were not able to enter Fortaleza do Pico, our main interest went out to the view we had over the city of Funchal. Because of the excellent geographical position of the fortress we had an absolutely unique view. The entrance and the courtyard gave great views over the Atlantic and over Funchal city. We were able to see that the city is situated in an "amphitheatre" like formation. It begins on the beach and rises almost 1200 metres on gentle slopes. It’s probably a shame that the opening hours are from 09:00h till 18:00h, otherwise it would have been some sight to have a look from this spot at Funchal in the dark!

The courtyard is also used for local festivals and we must say that it is the ideal setting for the these traditional popular religious festivals. These are occasions when music, the chiming of church bells, fireworks and decorations all add to the enthusiasm of the people in celebrating old traditions which have been kept alive. In spite of another strenuous walk back to the centre of the city we were glad that we visited this place.

Address:
Calcado do Pico, Funchal.

Directions:
The fortess is visible and reachable from Quinta das Cruzes.

Cable-Car Ride

by sandysmith

If you have a head for heights the cable-car trip up to Monte is a must for the views over Funchal. The modern cable-car has replaced the old funicular that used to connect Funchal with Monte. The lower terminal station is at the Parque Almirante Reis, located in the old part of Funchal town. For those of you that don't like cable-cars the local bus (number 20) also makes the journey up to Monte. The Monte Station is situated near Monte Palace Tropical Garden, at Caminho das Babosas. The ride takes about 15 minutes. You can return partway by the famous, if somewhat tourist, wicker basket sledge ride (see tourist trap tip) - different anyway!

Dolphin Safari just outside Funchal

by SwedishViking

I can recommend everyone that hasn't been to a dolphin safari that at least do it once in your life time. It's amazing and beautiful animals.

You can buy tickets in the marina (Cais da Cidade), there are small kiosks down the long pier.

It costs about 20 Euro/person for a two and a half hour safari (soft drinks and good photo opportunities included).

Bring your swimming suit, there is a short stop for those who want to swim (but NOT with the dolphins...).

Market Interior

by sandysmith

The market is situated on 3 levels around a central coutyard. Open daily except Sunday and Saturday afternoons. Amongst all the colour take time to notice the pretty tiles decorating the walls , showing old scenes of Madeira life - these are quite popular in Madeira.
