New Years Eve
by figgy1978
I am going to be in Funchal for New Years Eve and want to know where I can find a great party and place to watch the fireworks.

Most hotels near the centre offers nice parties .... but you need to be quick in booking one.
Also an option can be to see the fireworks on one of the catamarans or the Lobo Marino (ferry that goes to Porto Santo).
Cumprimentos,

Travel Tips for Funchal
Have some Madeira, M'dear!
by Jerelis
Who doesn't know the Flanders and Swann song "Have some Madeira, M'dear"? It has even been translated into a dutch song as well! We do consider ourselves wine lovers and having Madeira wine of course was a must once we were at the island.
Madeira wine is a fortified wine made at the island with the same name, which is prized equally for drinking and cooking. The maturing of the wine is peculiar and characteristic, because the wine needed to survive long voyages over sea and was subjected in buildings called estufas. It's also deliberately exposed to air, causing to oxidize. Due to this practice the wine has a very characteristic flavour.
Usually Madeira wine is very stable, an opened bottle of Madeira wine will survive unharmed for a considerable time, up to one year. Not that we needed that as we finished all the bottles we opened! :-) We also did see some Madeira wines in the stores that were pushing the century mark.
Bu anyway, we liked the local wine and even took some bottles to the Netherlands. Enjoy!
Socorridos Valley
by sachara
We really enjoyed our short walk of nearly two hours from Santa Quiteria to the Socorridos Valley and back. The valley is rough and scenic.
You can take another way, but we prefered the same path back, because we parked our car in Santa Quiteria. The views inland were totally different of the views towards the ocean, so we didn't regret to take the same route again.
Tea m'dear
by ettenaj about Reid's
Afternoon tea on the terrace at Reid's is essential. Settle into a wicker armchair and contemplate the cruise ships below whilst . awaiting tea and crustless sandwiches and Maderia cake. If this all sounds a little too staged try the poolside buffet lunch it is good value or you can pop in to the Cocktail bar one evening ( suit and tie requested) What to drink? Why, vintage Madeira. m'dear.
Praça do Municipio - Igreja Sao Joao Evangelista.
by Jerelis
Once we were on the Praça do Municipio (Municipal Square) we had some trouble to decide where to go first, because it's a bit overwhelming all this amazing square has to offer. At the north side of the square you'll find Igreja Sao Joao Evangelista (the Colegio Church). In 1624 the foundation stone for the church was laid and by 1647 the Igreja Sao Joao Evangelista was already finished. Until the 19 century the Igreja Sao Joao Evangelista represented the largest building complex in Funchal, time to get in or not ... ?
The church represents a typical Jesuit temple with an ample and high nave. The nave is flanked by identical lateral chapels, above which we found a passage built in the wall with windows and balconies at the choir level. A nice detail is that Dutch tiles from the 17th and 18th century cover the ceiling frescos. Highlight of the interior of Igreja Sao Joao Evangelista is certainly its collection of golden carved altarpieces dating from 1647, 1648, 1654 and 1660. The high altar is considered one of the jewels of Madeiran carving work from that time.
Pico dos Barcelos
by Margrette
It is not strict Funchal, more St. Martinho, but as it is placed in Funchal aera and you can get there by Funchal city bus....can say it is one of Funchal attractions. It is very small pick with two characteristic columns of trees on top. It is nice place to take a rest and admire spectacular view. It is 355m above see level, so if you are walking there (as we did) prepare for some up hill walk. Off course you can also ride with a bus to get there nr 4, 9, 12, 13. Very good viewpoint and perfect for just to sit down and take a rest. Little square surrowndedd by exotic plants.
