More about Suite Hotel Eden Mar

Loved the Eden Mar

by TripAdvisor Member John Calvert

My wife and I spent 10 wonderful days at the Eden Mar, and confirm everything other reviewers have said. It is a suite hotel and we had a spacious living room with gallery kitchen, separate bedroom and bathroom with a balcony overlooking the pool, garden and sea.
The Eden Mar is a 4 star hotel which was refurbished in 2004, so fittings throughout are of the highest order. Better still is that it links to the newly built sister Hotel Porto Mare, and all the facilities are shared. This means that you have two outdoor pools available, two indoor pools, two jacuzzis, fitness room, beauty spa, four restaurants and several bars to sample.
There was maid service daily, sometimes twice a day. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was wonderful.
All in all we had a lovely holiday, with nothing to complain about. This hotel chain is doing something right as it owns three of the top four Funchal hotels as rated by tripadvisor reviewers. Book it with confidence.

Loved the Eden Mar

Thanks to the reviews on Trip Advisor, my husband and I chose the Eden Mar Hotel and it more than lived up to its descriptions. The location was reasonably convenient for the town centre - about 25 mins walk -but only 2 minutes from the Lido and the promenade. A cuourtesy bus was provided hourly if you wanted to take it, and there was good public transport from next door to the hotel too. The hotel is part of a complex, with beautiful grounds, 4 or 5 swimming pools, lovely views, open air bars, it all feels very exotic and luxurious. You can use the facilities at the adjoining hotel, including the bar and two more expensive restaurants, or you can use the bar and restaurant in the Eden Mar. This restaurant is quite reasonably priced, and wonderful value if you stay half board. There is a great choice for every course, including a huge salad buffet and about 8 different sweets - sometimes we had a 5-course meal, all included in the half-board. Alternatively we could use vouchers towards a meal in one of the other restaurants in the hotel next door - we didn't baother as the food was so excellent in the Eden Mar. Breakfast too was a feast, ranging from several hot choices, and including croissants, toast, various fruits and juices, special breads, cereals, yogurt - you name it! The staff were lovely, and very helpful. The rooms are large and very spacious, with a massive bed, and a kitchenette with fridge and hobs and pans, plates, cutlery etc. Each room has a balcony with chairs and table, looking out over the grounds. We couldn't speak too highly of our week's holiday, and would thoroughly recommend the hotel to anyone. Thank you Trip Advisor for the reviews which made us choose it for our holiday!

Had a Fab Time at The Eden Mar.

by TripAdvisor Member ferrise

Based on the reviews here on TripAdvisor my Mum and I booked a last minute deal to the Eden Mar, and we were so gald we did!

We took a taxi to and from the airport, a pleasant journey which was about €35 each way. There is a bus service which is free to TAP Air Portugal passengers however it is not that frequent and takes much longer than the journey by car.

We had a junior suite, which was great as we split up the double bed and had what was like a room each, with the little kitchenette and balcony, so it was almost like an apartment in that respect.

The kitchette has all the cutlery and plates etc you could need, however one small snag is that it doesn't have a toaster or a grill, which would have been helpful.

We went on a self catering basis, which was great as it was lovely to have the option to use the hotel's many resturants, or bring in food of your own and enjoy it on the balcony. (There is a little chinese right next door which was great for take away!)

The hotel is built on the same complex as the PortoMare, and the Residence, and guests can use all the facilities on site, which meant that at times, we had a pool to ourselves!

The staff are really friendly (as are most locals on the island) and nothing was too much trouble.

Internet access is free in the lobby and the cable TV has lots of English speaking channels - which was super.

The whole complex was very clean and tidy, with housekeeping staff being attentive to detail.

Outside the complex there are lovely walks, with easy access to taxi's and busses. All bus journeys are €1.30 and they are very frequent - with services into the city centre, up to Madeira Shopping and also to Monte (where the cable car goes). Taxi's are fairly cheap, however there is a 20% sur-charge on the weekends. The hotel also has a courtesy bus service (a big luxury coach) to and from the city centre which runs about every 2 hours.

The island is great for walks and scenery - if you are travelling around this time however, make sure you pack good comfortable shoes and some warm clothes for the evening, as it can get quite chilly!

All in all we had a super time, we could have quite happily spent another week at what was a lovely and relaxing resort, on a beautiful island.

Fantastic holiday

Had one of the best holidays ever in this hotel. Our room was superb, as was the whole ambience and appearance of the complex. We are now seriously thinking about returning in July, and would advise anyone going to Madeira to book at the Eden Mar.

Great holiday, excellent hotel

by TripAdvisor Member maussie

My husband and I took a short trip to Madeira and stayed in the Eden Mar Hotel. It really is an excellent hotel. What we especially liked was the comfort and the sense of freedom the hotel had. As part of a complex of three hotels we could use all the facilities of the other two hotels of the resort and we spent a whole morning trying out all the swimming pools we could find (we found five!). The resort wasn't crowded and we sometimes had a swimming pool all to ourselves. The jacuzzis appeared to be more popular and we had to return several times to find one empty.
Our room was very comfortable and had a small kitchenette with a fridge, a tv with a lot of channels (local and foreign) and a balcony with a wonderful view and, very convenient, a drying frame. The bathroom had a lot of towels in all sizes (in between the towels I also found a cloth beach or shopping bag) and two bathrobes. The kitchenette had coffee, tea and sugar bags.
We didn't bother to go downstairs to have breakfast in the mornings: we made our own coffee and enjoyed tasting different kinds of local cheeses, sausages and exotic fruits on our balcony overlooking the palm trees and the ocean. We found everything we needed to drink and eat in a large supermarket very nearby the hotel (on the seaside of the Eden Mar shopping center).

We had a wonderful time on Madeira and enjoyed our stay in the Eden Mar Hotel very much.

The best holiday ever

My husband and I went to the Eden Mar for our honeymoon. The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough to help us. They upgraded us because it was our honeymoon and we had champagne waiting for us in our room.

The hotel and two hotels next door share all facilities so we had a choice of several indoor and outdoor pools, restaurants and bars. Because of that you can get lost in the hotel corridors but I strongly recommend the hotel tour that happens once a week.

We stayed at the hotel two weeks but didn’t see much of the room although it was really plush. There are lots of things to explore on the island and I would recommend the cable car that takes you to the Tropical Gardens. The views are amazing.

Simply the best, better than all the rest!

17th-24th April 2006 (4 adults, 2 x 20 year olds and 2 x 50 somethings)
We had read the reviews before we went and the Eden Mar lived up to our expectations.
A fast, friendly and informative check in set the tone for the rest of the week. Check out was equally efficient and painless.
Our two Junior Suites lacked for nothing in the way of comfort and facilities. We only used the kettle and fridge in the little kitchenette but the provision of a fully equipped mini kitchen would certainly sway us in our choice of hotel if visiting Madeira again. Our only disappoinment was that neither room had the sun on the huge balconies at any time of the day!
The choice of four restaurants was also an attraction when deciding to stay here. The Alfamar, which was included in half board, served good food and you could also opt for a la carte here. The Atlantida was also included on half board, with themed evenings, but we found the food here disappointing, typical mass produced fare and buffet style which always proves to be noisy. Il Basilico, the Italian Restaurant, had excellent food, good service and very trendy decor. However, the gem was the Med Restaurant, dining at its very best. A lovely ambiance only added to the excellent cuisine, beautifully presented by friendly staff. If you chose to opt for the a la carte menus you had a 15 euros credit towards your dining. Depending on your choice this could cover the cost almost completely at the Alfama or Il Basilico but was rather more, but well worth it, at the Med.
Plenty of choice for breakfast but the hot food buffet was rather tepid most days.
If you are energetic take the option of buying the 7.50 euros weekly pass for the tennis, table tennis, mini golf etc It does work out cheaper than paying for each activity individually.
If you take a catamaran trip to see the dolphins, and we saw lots of them, try the Sea Pleasure catamaran which is not as crowded as others. We chose this because we saw it each day from our balcony and saw how many people were on board-it just departs from a bit further away from the main boat trip area than the others.
The cable car up to Monte is fantastic as is the toboggan ride down but beware, when you get off the toboggan it is a 2km walk steeply downhill until you get back into Funchal. I wish I had taken a taxi!
We organised our tour of the west of the island by taxi. This was 110 euros, for the taxi for four of us. It was certainly better than being herded on and off a bus all day and we could spend as little or as long as we pleased at each stop.
We visited a few other hotels whilst we were there and can honestly say that we were very glad that we had booked the Eden Mar. It was better than many 5 star hotels we saw.
However, this is the first time that we have encountered paying for sun umbrellas-only 1 euro, but the bother of finding the umbrella man, getting the umbrella put up and him writing out a receipt each time semed rather pointless when the hotel provided both pool towels and bathrobes free of charge.
If you choose to stay at the Eden Mar I don't think you will be disappointed.

friendly staff

by A TripAdvisor Member

Just returned from the hotel eden mar where we had booked a junior suite for myself, wife and 2.5 yr old son. Staff very polite and friendly especially if you have a little one in tow. Suites average - cleanliness excellent, good view, kitchen area only has fridge, two hotplates and a sink. Bathrrom adequate, comfortable bed. Breakfast was ok - good coffee and excellent selection of bread's. Good location, only 20-40 mins walk from center of funchal. Supermarket underneath hotel, but bring own tea bags, sugar and coffee for room. Buy milk, bread etc from supermarket. Good local restaurants, 4 swimming pools to choose from in same complex, why didnt i rate it higher? spoilt by other hotels i have stayed in and received phone call from the complexs sales staff re timeshare just as we had got our son off to sleep. just one glitch in an otherwise good location

Great Holiday!

by TripAdvisor Member stirfry

I went with my husband to Madeira for the first time and we hope to return as it was superb. Arriving at the Eden Mar we expected to upgrade from a standard room but when we saw the room we were pleased to have no need to upgrade. Our room was spacious, clean, air-conditioned with excellent daily room service and a good sea view from the balcony. Bath robes and pool towels were supplied. The kitchenette was fine with 2 rings, kettle, sink, fridge, with adequate cupboards, pots, cutlery etc. A promenade runs from the hotel for 2 miles along the coast which is good for joggers and walkers. There is also a really good shopping centre (forum) just 10 minutes walk along the promenade. We often walked into Funchal which takes about 25 mins past many restaurants, shops and hotels. Bear in mind though that coming back to the hotel is uphill and takes a bit longer. The hotel courtesy bus runs until 5.30 pm and there is easy access to taxis and buses.
The Eden Mar was a delight to stay in. It’s a complex of 3 hotels and you can use all hotels facilities which are all great. Staff are very helpful and standards are high. There is a full activity programme if you wish to attend sessions of yoga, pilates, Portuguese language etc. I really enjoyed a full facial and a back massage at the Spa centre. There was entertainment programme for evenings in the hotel lounges. We enjoyed being bed and breakfast as it was very good – buffet style with a wide range of hot and cold food. Apart from breakfast we never ate at the hotel as it seemed more expensive and there were so many good inexpensive restaurants in the area around and in Funchal. We especially liked the small Italian just around the corner and the Paradise which is a short stroll towards Funchal and also the fish restaurant at the nearby Lido.
The scenery in Madeira is marvellous. We went on 3 tours – East, West and Nun’s Valley - which were all very good. We booked them with Strawberry Tours Office nearby as Thompson’s tours were much more expensive.
Madeira would not suit young singles who want to meet similar singles or go clubbing. There isn’t much happening after midnight, but that suited us. Next time we intend to take proper walking boots and go on Levada walks and I now know not to waste space in my suitcase with high heels as they were never worn as it’s hills everywhere.

Lovely hotel

This is a great hotel! The rooms are spacious, clean & up to date. The hotel facilities are amazing - 3 outdoor pools, 2 indoor pools, jacuzzis, gym, mini golf, tennis, free internet, entertainment programme etc!! With so much to do you need never leave the grounds of the hotel!! Having said that, the restaurants and bars around the lido area are all within easy walking distance of the hotel and are cheaper than the hotel prices.

We stayed on a bed & breakfast basis and the buffet breakfast was great. Plenty of choice & an opportunity to try local delicacies.

Staff were friendly, helpful and all spoke excellent English. We would definately stay here again!

Transfer from the airport to the CS Madeira Atlantic hotel

by szokejudit

Hi there,

Could you please advise how can we reach the hotel from the airport? Is there any shuttle or have you got any other proposal? If we take a taxi, would you have some information about reliable taxi companies and the costs?

There is a shuttle bus from the airport which has a stop very close to the Hotel CS. Cost €5 Times from the airport
09.30 11.30 14.15 16.30 18.00 19.30 21.15
A taxi will cost about 25-30 euros and there will be plenty outside the airport

Hi, Judit,
Your name strongly suggests you are Hungarian. Well, so am I. I've just booked a Madeira vacation for May. Not the same hotel, though, but the Eden Mar Suite Hotel. Appreciate if you told me how you liked it when you're back. Have a nice trip!

Bus from HotelEden/The Residence to the old Funchal city

by Takapiru

Is there some bus connection?
The route and timetable?
7 days tourist tickets?
Fare price? Where to buy the ticket?

Re: Bus from HotelEden/The Residence to the old Funchal city

by 64novpt

The hotels are at the west end of the town, overlooking the sea. It's supposed to have a regular free coach into the town center. However if you like to walk it's a nice walk down to town center, but the return is always up. In Madeira there are loads of taxis that you can hire for a day to do some sightseeing. As far as I know there are no tourist tickets for public transports.
If you prefer to use public transports, there are several bus companies to take you to the most interesting tourist spots at low cost. At Funchal the name of the public bus company is "Horários do Funchal".
The bus stations is in Funchal, so it's easy to get to. The tourist information offices can provide you with guides of the bus timetables and routes.
The buses and divided in 2 types of routes, urban (Funchal area, Botanical Garden, Monte, etc) and inter-urban (outside Funchal area, Curral das Freiras, Santana, Camacha)

Re: Bus from HotelEden/The Residence to the old Funchal city

by indian3summer

There is a free courtesy bus into Funchal several times a day from Eden Mar and The Residence. You can buy tickets for the city transport for 3,5 7 or 14 days, or you can buy a giro ticket (50 cents) and load it with as many trips as you want at €1 per journey. The buses are very frequent from very close by, taxis also in abundance, about €5 into the city and they MUST use the metre into the city limits. Ticket available from many shops and also in the kiosks in the city.
