Machico Excellence

Situated right in the heart of Machico, a stone's throw from the beach this hotel is excellent. I've stayed in very few hotels that I'd say are this good and that are also such good value.

It's owned and run by an incredibly helpful South African/Portuguese family. They are so attentive to detail and so friendly that even though this is a rather stylish new hotel of around 20 rooms it feels a bit like staying in a family B&B. The hotel opened in early 2008 and already has some deservedly good reviews online.

Rooms are all different sizes, we were staying there all week out of season and were lucky enough to have the suite on the third floor which was fantastic. A huge bathroom with twin sinks and a great shower. Beds were twin beds, comfortable with good pillows. Huge, huge wardrobe and each room has a safe that is useable for a small charge.

The hotel restaurant is also a very popular cafe with locals all day. Evening meals are so good that we ate there twice during a 7 night stay. In fact the best meal in Machico was here - the medallions of beef were delicious!

Unique Quality: Having stayed in numerous hotels over the years, this is certainly up there as possibly the best in terms of value, quality and friendliness. I'm not even sure I've ever given a 5 rating on any of my VT tips before in fact. This hotel is really special.

A continental buffet breakfast was included in the price. It's basic but there's plenty of everything you'd need. The fresh pastries are particularly nice and brought in from a quality local bakery each day, the same one that also provides pastries at the well known Golden Gate in Machico.

The staff and owners are incredibly attentive and friendly. It felt like nothing was too much trouble - they really go that extra mile. In the lobby you'll find free wifi though you can also have internet connection by wire in the room on request. The hotel also has a useful little shop where you can find souvenirs, postcards and even get your stamps.

The rooms are really lovely, though don't necessarily expect huge rooms unless you're lucky enough to be in the suite. The hotel still feels brand new, tastefully decorated and stylish. This was the kind of hotel I'd expect to find in a more urban city and to find it here in little Machico was just perfect. One of the few places I would recommend without hesitation.
