There's no doubt that this town still appeared in century XV and due to its port and fertile lands. Progressed so quickly that, before 1486, already the population had its church, attributing itself it construction to Rodrigo Enes, one of the first colonists of Ponta do Sol.
The sun point

"The village"
The town earned its name from the rocky point jutting into the sea and that reflects the sun?s rays. Settlement of Ponta do Sol began in 1425 and in 1501 it was upgraded to municipal status. This is considered the place receiving more sunshine than any other on the island. The municipality includes the sub districts of Madalena do Mar, Canhas and Ponta do Sol. Its very fertile soil has always been exploited for value-added farming activities. During colonization it was a centre for sugar cane production.
Ponta do Sol has a pebble beach very popular with Madeira people. Madalena do Mar is known for its fishing port for the beautiful avenue that runs through the town, whose, tranquil waters are a further attraction.
