Santana encompasses part of the Madeira Natural Park, a protected area of botanical interest. There are gentle walks around the plateau to tempt the less energetic as well as more challenging levada walks and for the truly fit the 6,000 foot Pico Ruivo, the islands highest peak. This was the first rural area to provide simple lodgings for the travellers of the mid 18th century who were keen to break their journey by foot or horseback. Here they marvelled at the lush vegetation surrounding the high peaks and rugged cliffs framing the wild Atlantic seascapes of the north coast. The landscapes remain the same but can now be enjoyed in classic Madeirense comfort from the Hotel Quinta do Furão, perched on the cliff-top surrounded by acres of its own burgeoning vines.

The main building has a welcoming wood panelled lounge with the vineyard echoed by the tiled friezes on the central pillars and where you can take traditional afternoon tea in comfort or settle down to plan tomorrow's excursion in the library area. It also houses forty stylish rooms, many of which have balconies and stunning views, and three spacious junior suites. Adjoining the main building is the heated swimming pool with a sliding roof designed to allow year round use and below this is a sauna and small gymnasium as well as a spacious games room.

A short walk of about 150 metres alongside the vines brings you to the original house, now converted into a restaurant serving food and wine belying its rustic décor. In the summer months guests, and many Madeirans, choose to dine on the terrace where the view is as mouth watering as the food. Beneath the restaurant is a cosy 'pub' ideal for refreshing returning walkers.

The highlight of the year at Quinta do Furão is the wine harvest when guests are invited to join in the crushing of the grapes and memorable barbecues are enjoyed around the old wine press accompanied by local music and dancing

Once an old wine-growing estate, the Quinta stands in the heart of the tiny hamlet of Arco de São Jorge, a couple of kilometres west of the larger village of São Jorge and just a short drive east of Ponta Delgada and São Vicente. Just behind, steep mountain slopes are cloaked in protected lauraceous forest, whilst in front lush terraces lead down to the ocean, making this an ideal spot for those who enjoy long country walks.

At the same time, the Quinta's beautiful grounds, tranquil ambience and gorgeous accommodation make it just as tempting to rarely step outside the imposing front gate, but to spend all one's time just relaxing and unwinding, ensconced in this truly idyllic setting. Set amidst extensive vineyards and sub-tropical orchards full of custard apples, avocado pears, oranges, bananas and fig trees are 18 independent cottages, each just right for a couple or a small family.

A few of the cottages were converted from existing buildings, others are of more recent construction, but all offer the same irresistible combination of comfort, character and style, as well as a good degree of privacy. Beautifully decorated throughout in contemporary colours with tastefully chosen accessories, each cottage has a double or twin bedroom, a bathroom, a living room with a comfortable sofa bed for one adult or two children and a well-equipped open plan kitchen with a fridge, full cooker, microwave oven, kettle, toaster and percolator. All have fireplaces, direct dial telephones and cable television, and each cottage also has its own shaded terrace with lovely views of the grounds and the surrounding countryside, which can be contemplated at length whilst swaying gently in the hammock that is thoughtfully provided.

A short stroll through the flower-filled gardens will take you to one of the Quinta's two swimming pools and there is a very welcoming lounge with an honesty bar and library for those who like to meet their fellow guests over a bottle of vintage wine in the evenings.

Casas da Beira are two detached, traditional houses set in pretty gardens just off the cobbled street of Ponta Delgada, a pretty village on the scenic north coast between Sao Vicente and Boaventura.
The smaller house, known as "The Cottage", stands at the entrance to the garden and is suitable for up to four people. The lounge is comfortably furnished with a dining table and chairs, a sofa and easy chairs where guests can relax in front of the television. The kitchen is separate, well equipped and has a microwave in addition to a hob. A small corridor leads to two pretty twin bedrooms which share a large shower room. The interiors are very homely, and there are raised terraces on two sides of the house, with lovely views towards the mountains and down to the ocean.

Standing on the other side of a tree-shaded courtyard is the "Mother House", which was previously the owner's private home and which is furnished in traditional style throughout. There are two double and two single bedrooms, as well as a large living room, a fully-equipped kitchen and a bathroom. Antique furnishings – including a beautiful four-poster bed in one of the bedrooms – lend the interiors plenty of authentic period charm.

A hire car recomended at Casas da Beira, to enable you to explore the spectacular north coast and the rugged interior, and to visit the larger village of São Vicente which is just a short drive west. However, there are a couple of small shops and restaurants within walking distance in the village itself, so you don't always need to drive to go out for a meal. Ponta Delgada's natural seawater swimming pools are also just a few minutes' walk away, and there is a wealth of local walks in the surrounding area for those who simply wish to savour Madeira's outstanding natural splendour.
