by scootergirl69 about Quinta Da Altamira
My wife and I stayed at Quinta Da Altamira in Mid-October 2006. This place is one of the best-kept secrets of the Azores. Quaint personal bungalows of various sizes are situated in the middle of beautifully landscaped gardens and orchards. Wonderful ocean views out toward Ilse Villa Da Franco, just up the coast. Caloura, in Agua de Pau, is one of the nicest ares of the island. Rentals were reasonably priced and private. I paid about $400 for the week's rental of a smaller bungalow.Included full kitchen facilities etc which allowed us to cook our own breakfast and dinner when we wished. Our bungalow even came with it's own cat, Felix, who pretty much resided with us for the entire week. Seriously, this Quinta was exactly what we were looking for in a place to stay. Clean and well-kept bungalows and beautiful scenery. Only 20 minutes drive o Ponta Delgada, thirty minutes or so to the airport. We were SOOO glad that we did not stay in a conventional hotel in Ponta Delgada. The owners are a German couple whom we found amiable and helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an inexpensive, private, island get-away. Private bungalows, landscaped gardens and orchards, ocean views; all for less than a hotel Downtown. Unbelievably good deal.

Caloura or Vale das Cabaças is a pretty area of Água de Pau, known for its peace and tranquility. It is protected by a high cliff that is overgrown with lush vegetation, and surrounded by old vineyards each with its own black basalt stone wall. In the past few years significant new homes have been built and it is now a very desirable place to live or have an occasional holiday home.
Narrow road leads to a tiny fishing port with colourful boats and a lovely bar facing the sea. There is a beach and a natural swimming pool where you can relax and refresh. Close by you also find a charming Convento da Caloura, a remarkable Baroque structure dating from the 16th century. Now in private hands, it can only be visited with the owner's permission. The convent's church, Igreja de NS das Dores, is beautifully covered with azulejos (also the interior) and deserve your attention.
Going to Vila Franca do Campo one can find several beaches, such as Prainha and Água d'Alto. On the way we also made a stop at Miradouro do Pisão which offers a magnificent view over Caloura.

This characteristic place, among vineyards protected by stone walls, is located in Água de Pau village. Here one can find a picturesque fishing port on a narrow creek, and a swimming-pool at the end of the breakwater.
Places to visit: Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. This monument, an interesting example of Baroque architecture, is integrated in the monastery of Recollects (Calouras) and was founded in the 17th century. Façade and interior are covered with glazed tiles Chancel, retable with funny angels with thick moustaches. Glazed tile portraits of Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint Philip Nery. Statues are attributed to a French sculptor who, with his son, lived among the Recollects of Franciscan monks. Altars come with carved woodwork, and tombstones with poetical inscriptions. Interesting gratings carved out of the store of the lateral façade. Churchyard with a bucolic atmosphere and leafy trees Ruins of former fortifications.
Fort Nossa Senhora da Conceição. This fortress was built in the 17th century to defend the harbour.
Take the first route on your right side after passing Água de Pau Square.
