Nordeste

The municipality of Nordeste is located in the extreme northeast of São Miguel. It is known for its landscape covered with trees, exotic flowers and endemic vegetation, and for its high mountains, gorges and deep valleys. There are numerous miradouros (viewpoints), such as Miradouro do Salto da Farinha, Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego and Miradouro da Madrugada, to name just a few, which offer spectacular views of the coastline and surrounding countryside. Nordeste is probably the municipality where nature was less touched by man and is one of the island's most appreciated treasures.
Along the main road is the charming Parque Natural da Ribeira das Caldeirões with the lovely Achada waterfall. If you cross a granite bridge you come to a beautiful area with lush vegetation. The area was once famous for watermills. One has been restored as a working museum.
Worth a visit is also a charming little town Nordeste with gracious Ponte de Sete Arcos (Seven Arch Bridge), Igreja de São Jorge, small museum, some nice old colonial buildings and an impressive Town Hall.
