Igreja de São Pedro
by Avieira67
The construction of this monument started in the 15th century, but it took more than two centuries to finish, where, despite the many changes made to the initial structure over the time, its original precious gilded woodcarvings, among which a richly ornamented high altar, can still be seen. Among other treasures, a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary of the Pains, several images and reliquaries from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the painting Feast of Pentecost by the Portuguese artist Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, beautiful ornate windows as well as, in the sacristy, some touching votive offerings from sailors can be admired.
Ermida da Mãe de Deus (Chapel of Mother of God)
by mircaskirca
Ermida da Mãe de Deus (Chapel of Mother of God) is located on the top of the hill, providing a beautiful view of the city. The original church that stood here was in 1915 demolished as they were afraid it could serve as a target for German submarines during the World War I.
Reconstruction of the church started in 1925. Inside of the cornerstone was placed a glass bottle containing the sermon given by Vicar Herculano Augusto de Medeiros who officiated the rebuildong ceremony on March 25, 1925. The work was slow and it wasn't completed until 1942. Because of the high elevation and views of the ocean and the city, the church has been often used as a military lookout and was occupied by Portuguese soldiers during the World War II. It was finally completed in early 1947.
