Not sure how long we will be in port, but I need to find something to do and would prefer to use a local service rather than the one provided by the ship

The cruise port is located pretty much in the center of town, so a walk around the old part of towns is a nice thing to do aswell.
Ponta Delgada is a really nice town.
If you like tours that are for the more active then i would recommend futurismo.

Built in the 17th and 18th century, from this church you have a beautiful panorama over the port. The interior consist of one nave with painted ceilings and a high altar in gold relief. Here you can see the famous painting "The Pentecosts" by the artist Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho.
This is the most welknown public botanic garden of Ponta delgada.
Here one can find a great amount worth seeing including a great fern ravine with a romantic bridge and a buttress-rooted India rubber tree, Ficos elastica.
The garden, set in magnificent sub-tropical trees, is bright with Acanthus, cannas, osteospermums and a huge hibiscus tree.
