Sete cidades??

by lisaincanada

Does anyone know the story behind the abandoned Hotel located right along the Sete Cidates hill? it's pretty creepy! I would have thought that this would be a thriving place to put a hotel due to the location.

What I've heard was that the hotel closed down because there was no clients ... and when I recall the times when it happen its probably true. Azores only opened to tourism in reality 10 years ago...

Actually dh brought up a good point that I think may be the reason..its always extreamly foggy up there and the roads are kind of narrow so if your a tourist trying to make your way back up to your hotel at night there is no way you would do it in those conditions :) at least that's what I think might be the reason :)

my parents r from sete cidades, my grandfather helped build the hotel, as i can recall i believe my father said that it cost to much back in the time.bc of that the lost of clients i also think he said that it was a non portuguese person that owned it. my parents do says it was really beautiful inside

It's a shame that it sits there abandoned, it does look like it would be beautiful inside, from the outside though it looks scary. Last time we went there (July04) my brother and I tried to go up the stairs and have a look inside, well there was a big nasty dog chained to the wall that chased us off the property ..man that was so scary! lol won't try that again :) I can't wait to go back to visit, I think about the island every single day *sigh*

Travel Tips for Ponta Delgada

Whale watiching.

by cachaseiro

Whale watching is big on the Azores and Ponta Delgada has several companies offering it.
The Azores has a lot of whales, both several spieces of migrating whales aswell as quite a lot of sperm whales who reside there all year long.
There was commercial whaling on the Azores until 1986 but these days they make money out of showing the whales to the tourists and of the many companies offering it in Ponta Delgada there are a couple of real good ones with professional marine biologists working for them and a very responsible attitude.

I would highly recommend whale watching as it is spectacular and by creating a whale watching economy then there will be very few people wanting to back to hunting whales like you see people do in other parts of the world.

Of the companíes working with this in Ponta Delgada i would recommend "futurismo" or "picos de ventura" as they are very good.

Palácio de Santana

by Avieira67

The Santana Palace (designed by an English architect in 1846), located on the North side in Ponta Delgada, is inside a beautiful garden and serve nowadays as the residence of the President of the Regional Government of the Azores.
In the extensive garden you can find native Azorean plants, interesting shrubs and a long allée of box trees.

Ponta Delgada

by tolovajka

Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel, has developed around a lovely, natural bay. It charms with its typical architecture - a mixture of Gothic, Baroque and Manueline style that reminds of colonial architecture. Very nice are the streets covered with paving arranged in geometrical patterns.
