The prison is in an old monestary.
by cachaseiro
In 1834 all religious orders were prohibited in Portugal for a period of a few decades and in that period many monestarys were converted in to various other things and in Ponta Delgada they have a pretty big former monestary that has now become the towns prison.
It´s situated right by the sea and the prisoners surely have a good view from there.
Ermida de São Bras (Santa Luzia)
by mircaskirca
The tiny Ermida de São Brás (Chapel of São Brásl) is squeezed into the downtown shopping district and is typical of small neighbourhood chapels found throughout the island. Built in 1584, it is also known as Ermida de Santa Luzia (Chapel of Santa Luzia). Luzia was the daughter of a rich family and was losing her sight. She promised that if she could keep her sight she would build a chapel in gratitude.
Inside you'll find some nice examples of Mexican religious paintings along with three altars, the central altar to São Brás, one on the left to São José and on the right to Santa Luzia. The bright colours and art work of the altars are really worth seeing. The chapel is still in service.
It is open Mon-Fri 9am-6:30pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.
Jardim António Borges
by mircaskirca
Jardim António Borges is a charming and enjoyable garden which really deserves a visit. It was originally founded as a private garden by a famous businessman and politician of the same name. An amateur landscape architect and botanist, he designed the park on his own estate, bringing beautiful exotic plants from all over the world and arranging them in the romantic style of the times.
Today it is a very pleasant green space, one of the largest in the city of Ponta Delgada, with small lakes, grottos, stone work, paths and bridges leading through. Unfortunately, most of the original trees have long gone. Well worth seeing is a superb Indian rubber tree with its unusual roots coming out from everywhere, making this tree look like a giant octopus. Going through some minor restoration, it is one of the most enjoyable parts of the city where you can take a leisurely stroll.
At the entrance of the park is a statue of António Borges de Câmara Medeiros. A little ahead is a playground area for children and beyond that is a café where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while relaxing in the shade.
The garden is open daily 9am-8pm in summer and 9am-7pm the rest of the year.
