apartments ZUTO: Zuto Apartments
Zutos Apartments became our base for our Montenegro
adventure in the West Balkans and what could be
more fitting than a room in the old fortress (Kalaja)
in Ulcinj Stari Grd (old city) once inhabited by Illyrians,
Greeks, the Colchinians,Romans, Turks, Italians,
now mostly Ethnic Albanians and Russians in the summertime
who seem to be more and more.
The trickle of backpackers and individual travellers also on
Have you heard of the tale about Don Quixote? History tells
us that the famous Spanish author, the same Miguel Cervantes
who penned the famous book Don Quixote, was held captive in
Ulcinj for several years after being captured at sea by Corsair
pirates off the coast of Barcelona,
Well this is what I was thinking about in our different rooms we
stayed in at Zuto's looking out to sea.
Ulcinj is one of the oldest towns at the Montenegrin
coast and is very well preserved. The old town (Stari Grad)
is surrounded with old walls and towers and it´s like an old
castle over looking the sea and Zutos place is right in the heart
of it all.

apartments ZUTO: Home away from home in Ulcinj Stari Grad
I must say from looking at the pictures
and the accomodation prices of Zuto's place,
it seemed to good to be true, and surely a scam
or something, as how could someone offer such a beautiful
sea view in such a beautiful place, I mean, €10 per person
in the hight of the season? Well it was all true and look forward
to returning many more times. Although I found cheaper places,
there was no better location than his.The only problem was
we felt too comfortable and with wifi my daughter was
using her laptop to max. OK me too, I admit was borrowing her
laptop and sitting on the terrace by the entrance spending
time online too. Although Zuto could speak Serbian/Montenegrian,
Albanian and German, we could get by using my rusty Russian
with a few Polish words thrown in, His whole family were very nice
and his daughter speaks fluent English. 2 months prior to my visit,
I received such nice emails describing everything and he answered my
questions in full. Although a few minor things could be improved,
which I'm sure they will. I spent one of my best holidays abroad here.
There are 5 different rooms, 3 with en suite bathrooms
2 rooms for 2 people and 2 with 1 double + 1 single bed for 3 people.
The 2 room suite/apartment is for 5 people, suitable for a family.
You might ask for a discount if you stay longer and the off season
price is €8 per person. He also offers half board at an extra price
and he is a fantastic cook as he used to work as a chef/cook in
one of the big hotels before he had a heart operation some 10
years ago, but you wouldn't notice that with all the energy he has.
Wifi access from most parts of the house,
accept not always the top 2 rooms.
He will let you borrow his computer if
really needed. A kitchen downstairs to
use for cooking with utensils and plates provided.
Fridges in every room.
Antigona Restaurant next door run by his brother.
Stari Grad concrete beach just a few metres away.
One of the best sea views from Stari Grad (Old city).
Very helpful and friendly family.
Wifi terrace, but bring an extension cord for power
unless Zuto has got one already.
No noise at night time and NO CARS AT ALL.
Very close to the rest of Ulcinj town, 10 to 15 mins
to supermarket by Mala Plaza.

Hotel Galeb: Hotel Galeb
Hotel Galeb is a huge building on top of Suka peninsula but nevertheless not far from the shore. It is run by Ulcinjska Rivijera, just as the Ada Bojana complex where we were, then, it should be a good place, well kept. It has an indoor swimming pool, a sauna

rent a private room.
there are lots of places that rent out private rooms in ulcinj.
it is very cheap and the location can be great if you spend a little time to find the right place.
i had a private room with a view over the beach for just 7 EUROs.

Hotel Albatros: As much an experience as a hotel
This is a hotel that has clearly seen better days - a lot of the lights in the lobby don't work, the bars are deserted and the pumps in the swimming pool didn't seem to be working.
Strangely enough though, I really enjoyed my stay here. There's a great view over the sea with balconies in all the rooms (ask for a room on the top floor), the breakfast waiters are very attentive and it has a private area to swim.
The rooms are dated but very comfortable and reasonably sized. The only real problem is that it's a good 15 minute walk along the coast to the town - best not to stay here if you're travelling alone, there were 2 of us and even then it was probably a little dodgy.
Still, a good value choice for staying in Ulcinj.
