Do to a missed train connection (Budapest--Belgrade--Sofia) I ended up in Belgrade for 24 hours--not such a bad fate--but checked into a rather unfortunate hostel across from the main train station--the Downtown Belgrade Hostel. Ratings on hostel websites such as gomio.com were promisingly high but the lodging was a let down.
While the location keeps you from lugging your rucksack up the hill to downtown, there is nothing to do in the surrounding neighborhood. The hostel--since that what they call it--is basically one room with four bunks in what seems to be an apartment. The manager--a friendly middle aged lady--had no problem accommodating us but the accommodations were sparse and unwelcoming. My morning shower was cold and the free breakfast was meager. From here it was a ten minute walk up hill to the central city, despite the fact that the hostel description says it is right next to the pedestrian area and bohemian district.
I would not stay there again and none of the other lodgers felt up for another night. While I was heading on to Sofia, the rest went to try their luck at a different hostel.
