Socialist-era design at its best/worst

The Hotel Moskva is Belgrade's flagship hotel, and was allegedly renovated recently. I shudder to think what it must have been like before the renovations, as everything in the room appeared to predate the fall of the Berlin Wall - including the rotary phone that sounded like a freight train when it rang. The room came with a request that guests not open the windows, as the air conditioning system was working. After about 5 minutes of suffocating in a room that was easily 35 degrees (despite the outside temperature being 18), I relented and opened the double windows to get actual air into the room. The bathroom had fairly good hot water, a decent toilet and the standard shower that bathed both you and half the washroom. The bed was decent and the matress was firm, although it was a bit difficult to sleep when the choice was between suffocation with the windows closed and sleep noise with the windows open. The room had a massive minibar fridge and an old tv, as well as supposed wifi internet connections that cost RSD400 for 6 hours that never work. Finally, the breakfast, allegedly included but billed separately, was decent and included a large selection of hot and cold foods every day except Sunday, when you must order your breakfast from the waiter.

All in all, this hotel is grossly overpriced at 98 euro a single room. I can't really compare to other accomodation in Belgrade, as I have only stayed at the Moskva, but I don't imagine that there is much choice in the city. From what I heard from other travelers staying in more budget accomodations, the amenities in the Moskva are much more than you can expect at some of the cheaper hotels in the city. Note that the website it out of date - especially the price list.

Unique Quality: I suppose that the best and most unique aspect of Hotel Moskva is its ambience. The hotel is, obviously, a Socialist-era relic that preserves all the trappings of an Intourist-style hotel. Beyond that, though, the staff adds to the impression of this being something out of a Sean Connery James Bond movie. No smiling, dolled up receptionists here. All the people who work at the front desk are men in their thirties, dressed in grey suits and with physiques that say "I could snap you in half if I felt like wasting my time on it." They are curteous and helpful, but you'd hate to argue or complain about something for fear of the consequences of pissing off one of the men in suits.

Belgrade History

The Hotel Moscow is a good option if you are looking for a hotel in Belgrade. The hotel, which is one of the oldest in Belgrade, is clean and comfortable, with rooms ranging in price from 85 Euro to 125 Euro per night. Like many other hotels in Belgrade, the Hotel Moscow also boasts a pleasant sense of Yugoslav Communism -- it is easy to feel as though you have stepped back in time while staying here (my wife disliked this quality of the hotel, but I enjoyed it).

Located right downtown, the hotel is conveniently located near a number of very nice restaurants and bars, including Belgrade's pedestrian mall

Breakfast is included with the price of the room and is fairly standard (though not a buffet). If you order coffee, it is extra. The staff is also friendly and the cafe on the first floor is a great place to have a beer and watch Belgrade walk by.

Unique Quality: The elevators have floor mats that indicate the day of the week on them -- just in case you forget.

Old charm of Beograd

Mogu mislit' kol'ko bi me danas odrapili. Moj moto je, hebeš lovu ako ti je dobro.

Old, Nice and Very Popular

Placed in the very heart of the city in the building from 1906 ( state protected ), Hotel Moskva is the ideal place to stay for those who like the nice clasic interiors. Rooms are spacious, some are on the two levels and all have cable TV. Hotel also has the great restaurant and pastry shop that is famous for its delicious cakes.

Unique Quality: If you don't stay here you at least shouldn't miss its restaurant. I would sugest you to try stuffed green veggetables (sarmice od zelja), similar to cabbage rools but much better.

Good Hotel in Beograd?

by alpeters57

I will be in Vrsac attending a wedding and will probably visit Beograd for one night before leaving and wonder what are some decent hotels--good but not too expensive?

I've been to Beograd before, even met you late, departed PM, Djindjic, rip. A real shame that. Good city, but I got lost near midnight at the train station and my little bit of Slovak didn't do me much good.
