Travel expences for native Serbian

by keypad4

Hi everyone , I am organising a trip for a serbian to visit me in Ireland and just need a bit of clarification on some prices please. I've been quoted €30 by bus from Nis to Belgrade (return ticket) and 2 connecting flights from Belgrade to Ireland at about €550 in cost . Do these prices seem reasonable ? any replies would be very welcome. Thank you.

- Nish-Beograd for ca. €15 each way by bus seem to be not very much off. The regular international TCV fare for a Nish-Beograd train ticket bought in Ireland is €24.60. These are about twice the price of an Intercity/Express train bought locally, which would be about €10-12. Trains are somewhat cheaper than better bus companies. Hence €15 is realistic.

- The problem with Beograd<-->Ireland is, there is no direct service.
Here are the airlines serving Beograd:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgrade_Nikola_Tesla_Airport

In general, Budapest<--> Ireland is no problem, but the Serbian citizen has to travel to Budapest first (visa!). The lowest Beograd<-->London fare is 19.260 Dinar (=€218 ) including the tax, but not every day and not flexible. The cheapest flexible fare on JAT to London is 42919 Dinar (=€485).

You can double-check on www.jat.com the prices from Beograd.
If traveling from Budapest instead of Beograd, the cheapest round-trip price to Dublin on MALÉV is 48600 Forint which is roughly 200 Euro. You have to add the costs of a double transit visa to Hungary + time/efforts to get the visa (the closest Hungarian consulate is in Beograd or Skopje or Sofia).

An alternative would be to book Sofia-Budapest-Dublin flight on MALÉV, the cheapest price is €356.8 including the tax. Sofia is very close to Nish, closer than Beograd and a r/t bus ticket is in €20 range, r/t train ticket is somewhat less. The pain is the Bulgarian transit visa. But fortunately there is a Bulgarian consulate in Nish. Bulgarian visa is FREE to Serbian citizens and relatively easy to get. Same as Hungarian - but it requires an extra trip to Belgrade.

Hence, I would suggest to use Sofia as starting point and book the Sofia-Dublin MALÉV tickets on-line via www.malev.com, than there could be a saving of roughly €100-€200, depending on the day of travel - but not much more. I tried to get a Lufthansa price from Beograd but they are not bookable on-line from Beograd and usually Lufthansa is more expensive than JAT or Malév.

Thanks about the good news regarding the death of the EU visa, good riddance, R.I.P., "tsarstvo ej nebesnoe" as we say. :-) just in time for it to go down the tube. It was so frustrating for the locals!

I was thinking, Sofia is easier to reach from Nish than Budapest via Beograd. But the cheapest airplane ticket is about 150 Euro more than from Budapest.

In the case if there will be no visa needed, Nish-Beograd-Budapest-Beograd-Nish round-trip by train is precisely €47.50 plus €22 (r/t) in Bulgarian sleeper (less relieable) or €32 in Serbian/Hungarian sleeper (better idea).

For you - just in case - it is possible to entirely avoid Budapest now as the trains stop now at both Köbánya-Kispest and Ferihegy-I terminal. I did not explore it yet, but:

a)
- Airport->Köbánya-Kispest->Airport by airported bus (200 Ft each way)
- Köbánya-Kispest->Kiskunhalas->Kelebia->Subotica by (yucky) train

b)

- Airport -> Cegléd->Szeged/Segedin by Intercity
- Segedin->Subotica by bus (not so yucky) or train (short, but yucky).

From Subotica on many possibilities. But this is not tried yet. Our train adventures in the area are probably over, we just got a Honda "Ody" for 7 people, it will be shipped in few month over as we move to Europe. :-)

Re-visa: Bulgarians and Hungarians push very hard to kill it for good, I think, Romanians, too. Also at the time CRO will be in EU I am 100% sure, the visas for all ex-YU citizens (that would also include BiH and MK) will be the thing of the past. Even now, the situation with SLO-visa is a scandal.

"isnt it better to get good looking..."

Aha, that's one of the reason why we going back to Europe having three sons.

€300 is a very-very good price. Our guys are 19-13-10, so one is certainly "at risk" already.

You can get Budapest - Dublin return flight for under 100 euros with ryanair. If there are special promotions (and there are several times a month) for even lower price. Me, and my friends are goind to Ireland on 30th of November and we paid ticket just 50 euros per person - actually tickets were 0.01* euro, but we paid taxes, fees, luggage fee and credit card provision.

Another alternative would be bus from Nis to Belgrade centre; airline bus to airport; Lufthansa Belgrade - Frankfurt - Dublin. Currently about £385.
Lyfthansa are reliable. That's who I go with.
