Cheap and Clean
I came to Rooms Marina by pure chance. I actually first went into the Hotel Vojvodina, which is the standard state-run hotel of former Communist glory of which there is at least one in each major city (Moskva in Belgrade and Ambassador in Nis). There were no more rooms (somehow, a Serbian hotel had managed to be booked up) so the very nice man at the reception called Apartments Marina and confirmed that they had a room for me. Marina was ironing when I got there, but she was quite helpful and showed me a huge double room with bathroom for 40 euro – a bargain in Serbia. The bed and furniture were sort of the standard affair of what you can get cheapest at IKEA, but it was all very clean and quiet, which is really all I wanted or needed. Rooms Marina is located in one of the courtyards that connect to the main square by little alleyways. It can be hard to find at first, but you have to be attentive and watch for the numbers on the walls, which are the numbers of Zmaj Jovena. The rooms are, as I said before, quite simple, although they all include air conditioning and a TV with numerous (Serbian language) stations. There are also fairly large bathrooms with shower and toilet, and a desk. The hotel itself doesn’t provide internet, but the one next door does have wifi service that you can steal from time to time during the day.
