If you are travelling on a very tight budget, you will find that camping is either free or very cheap in many parts of the country. The guide books are worth checking out for more detailed info on campsites, although they aren't always accurate. I have found that there are usually more alternatives than are listed in more remote areas.

by Shafali $8-$14/night per person
For the price, they offer so much!! We stayed at the one in Brasov and it is a beautiful house, very clean, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful!!!! The bathrooms are nice. We stayed in a double room for $12 each/night. That was the most expensive room. I belive it has gone up by $2 now. We were given free towels, free beverage or pack of cigarettes daily, free hour of internet daily, free breakfast, free friends (the staff would take time off and take us out). This was a really great place to stay. It should be in the guide books by now. It is a new chain of hostels set up by an Australian and some other people. Well, actually I hear the one in Brasov closed down recently....sorry Theme: HostelComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: There are a chain of these hostels throughout Romania(Bucharest, Brasov, Sighisiora) and they are expanding across the Balkans.Other Contact: try an internet search for Elvis

When in a city, it is better to stay at a pension. They are cheaper and cleaner than hotels. In any case, always choose a lodging that is private property. In rural areas you can ask the locals to put you up, but often they offer it themselves. You will get a clean room, good food and they usually don't ask for money or they charge you very little.
You will benefit of low prices, extraordinary hospitality and an original setting. You will also get to know the people. Theme: Pension/GuesthouseComparison: least expensive

even if you're backpacking, you can spend the night in hotels....I spent 2 nights in an old beat down 8 story hotel (that looked like the hotel from Psyco) for only 60 bucks...but, I had two double beds a great view and a huge bathroom...breakfast included...I'll get the name later when I get the chance out of larger cities 20-30. inside larger cities 40-50
overall a great location, price, atmosphere. Gets you in the mood for visiting romanian palaces/castles Theme: HotelComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Sinaia

I returned here in April 2004 and am happy to report that little has changed since my first trip. Nothing has been remodelled. The Staff is surly and surely Mafia and insist nightly that you are lonely and want a girlfriend. No pressure of course. The Cold War feeling is still evident. One change, and this applies to much of Bucharest, is that the neighborhood around the hotel is noticeably safer. Less propositioning, fewer shady characters, etc...
A functional Modernist classic in with Art Deco details and long time official government hotel. It has seen better days but will transport you back to the Cold War. Dull green carpets, east-bloc furniture, and cold brown tap water(to be fair, not always). Charming all the same. It also seems to be run by the mafia: your neckless bell-thug in an ill-fitting uniform never fails to offer you a girl... If a out-of-the-ordinary, but not too much, hotel experience is your cup of tea, forget the antiseptic 5 star clones and try the Ambasador. by tiganeasca My favorite hotel in Romania is the Imparatul Romanilor ('Roman Emperor') in Sibiu. This regal grande dame first opened in 1555 and has hosted the Austro-Hungarian Emperor, composer Johann Strauss, and me! Doors to each room are framed in handworked rosewood. The rooms, though small, are very attractive. At $45 a night (in 1999), it was a treasure. It's exceedingly well-located: with the Piata Mare only about thirty seconds away, you can walk almost anywhere you would want in Sibiu from the front door of the hotel. It also hosts a wonderful restaurant, though the local black marketeers who seem to make up most of the clientele, tend to detract from the enjoyment a bit. I paid about $45 per night in 1998. by BorderHopper Sanda & Constanine's Apartment e-mail them at: bobava_2000@yahoo.com $15 USD a night w/ meals
This is there own private residence but they rent out a beautiul room in their spacious apartment for a small fee. I'm paying $15 USD a night and that includes home cooked meals by Sanda. It's centrally located in downtown near the Revolutionary Plaza. The best way to get there from the airport s to walk from the terminal a short distance to the street, you'll see the public bus stand that says Bus 783. For a very small fee (apx. 10 cents) it will take you 20 minutes to get into downtown Bucharest. Ask the driver to let you off at the Hotel Intercontinental and then walk back from the direction the bus was headed from a block or two and you will find their apartment on the corner.
