    A nice all-around hotel

    by

I stayed just one night while on a road trip, and this was not the first hotel I went to in Alba Iulia. I checked some other hotels from my guide book first, but they were very dirty and in unsafe areas. Finally I went to Hotel Transilvania and got a room. Everything was very clean and the service was very good. The area is very safe also. The restaurant had a very good and inexpensive breakfast. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others staying in Alba Iulia because it is one of the only good hotels there.

Unique Quality: This hotel was significantly cleaner and "safer" than other hotels in Alba Iulia.

if you can't find accomodation elsewhere

    by

This hotel has a poorer reputation than Parc or Cetate, but the prices are also a bit lower than at the other two. It's situated very closely to the Parc Hotel so a walk of approx 300 meters between them should give you enough information to make up your mind.

Directions: in the center of the town, near the Courthouse

Claes, get your engines running - it's a shame that this gem of a town isn't even on the main list of Romania's hot spots - especially considering the hordes of tourists that are coming lately .
I'll try to post some more pics and tips too - I've got some pretty good shots from december 1st (courtesy of Mique, but using them with permission :) )

Travel Tips for Alba Iulia

Find the hidden window

by Mique

Some parts of the citadel are really old. And sometimes you can find clear evidence of it. In one of the houses in the citadel you can find embedded in the wall the part of an old window. But it has sagged down a lot. The new window has build partially over it byut most of the old window frame has been preserved.

Journey to Transylvania

"Geneology Research"

I traveled hear in order to do research about my ancestors. Otherwise there is not so much here from a tourist perspective. There is a nice castle to walk around, but not much else. I was fortunate to stay in a Hungarian guest house which kept costs down. It was very nice with private room, shared bathroom, and a kitchen to use.

"Regional State Archive Office"

If you want to do research here, you need permission from the main office in Bucharest.

Alba Iulia

Alba Iulia wasn't the first place on my list to visit. But then i heard it has a citadel and that it was one of the most important cities in Transsylvania. So i had to go there. Unfortunately the old town has been flattened by Ceaucescu and the city isn't very appealing. Luckily he left the citadel and its buildings inside alone.

It was in Alba Iulia that in 1918 the treaty was signed that joined Transsylvania and Romania. So for the Romania we know today, Alba Iulia is of great significance

VT-member Dunemaire was so nice to be my guide around Alba Iulia. Thanks Andrea and Timi

December the 1st - Party !

by dunemaire

The pics shown here are taken by mique, used with her permission.
The 1st of december is Romania's national day, comemorating the fact that in 1918 they held a huge gathering with people from all over Transilvania here , and they signed Transilvania's union with the rest of Romania.
You can see lots of folk dances, listen to folk songs, hear some more "modern " bands playing, drink hot wine with spices , eat pork/ beef/ sheep fried on a stake , look at the fireworks and generally have a good time.
