Arad
Arad is a city in Romania, close to Hungarian border (Nadlac custom going to Mako then Szeged in Hungary).
I transited the city more times but only once I walked in the city center. Buildings are old and nice.

I will be in Bucharest mid-August and hope to travel to Budapest to catch the end of the Sziget festival. I'm trying to work out the cheapest way to do this, without taking too long travelling. I have found a flight with Blue Air from Bucharest to Arad at a good price but am having trouble finding info on travelling from Arad to Budapest either via train or air. Can anybody help me with travel information for this route? and rough prices? Thanks
There are numerous direct trains from Arad to Budapest daily (departing from Arad at 2.04am, 5.49am, 7.43am, 9.47am, 11.49am, 1.42pm, 3.49pm, 5.43pm etc.). The trip takes about four hours and tickets start at about €19.
Buses also run on this route; they get to Budapest in about the same time as the train but are slightly cheaper.
Thank you - very helpful answer.
In addition to the previous answer :
- a useful site to see the railway timetables : www.mersultrenurilor.ro
- a link for the mentioned route : www.mersultrenurilor.ro/Ruta/Arad/Budapesta_Keleti
- prices can be found only for the Romanian section (Arad-Curtici); for the Hungarian section (Lokoshaza-Budapest) see www.mav.hu
- more than that, for the entire European railway network, one of the most reliable site is www.bahn.de
All the best,
Daniel
I also need to travel between these two points:
Budapest, Hungary to Arad, Romania (and back again)
Does anyone know the names of the bus companies that run these routes and where to buy tickets and catch the bus?

In Arad the pragmatism of nowadays is mingled in the long lost culture of the 19th century.
Everywhere you look there are imposant houses with their windows and walls beautiful decorated decorated. It's like living in today and beeing sorounded by aspects of the past.
Arad is the capital city of Arad County, in western Romania, in Criºana, Ardeal, on the the river Mures.

My interest in neoclassical sculpure was pleased to find a beautiful piece of art in one interesting square. The Libery Statue lies in the Reconciliation Park, a work of art by itself. The statue dates from the last half of the 19th century and it was erected in the memory of 13 martyr generals (showed at the bottom of the statue). High above it can be seen the personification of Hungary and below her, many interesting figures in different situations.
The night has a dramatic effect on a city: it brings out new aspects, it transfroms the look of the city. In Arad at night all the lighrs are on. And I mean ALL lights. The cityhall was recently lighted on grand scale and so becoming a very appreciated turistic night stop. On the same Revolution Blv. as the cityhall, there are many other buildings on which there ware thrown more or less rays of light.
Like I've said, there are so many sculptures scattered all over Arad, in the most unexpected places, that you'll be astonished. Here is an exmple of statues at the bacony of the Szantay Palace, which can be found near the cityhall. In Arad many old buildings encontered in a walk through the city are named as Palaces.
The Cultural Palace we've found to me near our hotel and behind the cityhall. It holds the city's orchestra and it hosts the classic concerts in the city. Also in the building, but through other entrance, it can be visited the Natural Museum of Arad.
The river Mures roves the city and it gives a beautiful place to relax, as you could walk on the embankment along it. On the other cliff, as the rivers makes a curl, we have found an amusement park and many shimming pools.
