Bacau! Arriving by train from budapest...

by indyblu

Hey I am coming from budapest and was wondering if there are direct trains from budapest to bacau, and how long they take/how much they are..
is it easier to take a direct to bacau or maybe a train to bucharest and then to bacau from there?
many thanks
neil:)

There aren't any direct trains from Budapest to Bacau.

The fastest way to do this trip is to:
1) take the Corona Express train heading from Budapest to Brasov through northern and eastern Transylvania (it leaves from Budapest Keleti station daily at 5.15PM);
2) get off somewhere along the route and catch a train to Bacau:
- in Dej, where you can catch a train to Suceava and from there another one to Bacau;
- in Miercurea Ciuc, where you should be able to get a train directly to Bacau;

This way, the trip will take about 15 1/2 - 16 hours.

You can of course take a train from Budapest to Bucharest (there are 4-5 direct trains daily) and then one from Bucharest to Bacau (there are 8-9 of them daily), but this will take longer, 19-23 hours.

There is also at least one direct bus from Budapest to Bacau, leaving from Budapest's Nepliget bus terminal on Fridays at 7AM.

Another alternative is to fly from Budapest to Targu Mures (240 km west of Bacau) with the low cost airline WizzAir (http://wizzair.com/), then catch a bus from Targu Mures to Bacau (a 5 hours trip).

There is no direct train. The schedule is not easy to chose, it depends, how fast you want to go and where.

For instance you can go via Bucuresti (I would NOT because I like the painted monasteries) or you can board the numerous Timisoara-Suceava trains somewhare (depends on your interest, where) and than go from Suceava south to Bacau. This is what I would do.

Or you can go on the Sekler (Székely) "körvasút" (round-line) with the train #407 from Budapest till Ciceu, than change in Comanesti and Adjud. (Possibly good choice)

Or you can go from Budapest to Lvov with the overnight train, visit Lvov, than go with the Lvov-Bucuresti sleeper till Bacau via Vadul-Siret. (Little bit long, but very comfortable, good for lazy and who don't mind communicate in Ukrainian/Russian in Lvov (I would probably consider it, too).

Or you can combine some of these.

Obviously the price depends on the choice and also on where you buy the ticket.

Yes, "Corona" is precisely the train #407. It goes to Brasov via longer "round-line" route via Cluj-Dej-Deda, leaving that at Ciceu.
