TV and Movies in Brasov

by daileyjoy

It looks like in April we will be leaving the US for Brasov. We have 2 children and were wondering if there are any cable stations in English. We were also wondering about movie theaters do any of them play American movies or any movies at all in Emglish.

Congratulations on your decision !
Generally the Romanian media uses for translation subtitles rather than dubbing.
Romanian cable companies have several channels broadcasting in English only (mainly news channels: CNN , BBC, Euronews ) and some in English with Romanian subtitles ( Discovery, National Geographic, HBO, Hallmark etc). Unfortunately children orientated channels (Cartoon Network, FoxKids) are usually dubbed in Romanian.
Movies, both on TV and in the cinema, are played in the language they were made in, with Romanian language subtitles (again, except for children orientated stuff, which is dubbed in Romanian - under the assumption that young children can't read).

all the movies and foreign channels have subtitles. don't worry everything is in english. it' s the same think in movie theaters and most of the movies are american and quite new movies so don't worry we are in eastern europe but the comunism era is long gone.

Travel Tips for Brasov

spooky school

by Aurorae

Architecture of Brasov is very original, there are some truly unique buildings, among them this school! Yes, believe it or not, this is a school where children go to study! It looks more like Harry Potter college, but after all, this is Transylvania... muahahaha (spooky laughter here)

Castle Day Trip: Rasnov

by antistar

Now THIS is Transylvania.

Rasnov is a rather ordinary town with an extraordinary castle sitting above it. The castle acts like a gateway between the flat, dull landscape of the city below and its acres of pastoral farmland, and the heady, dreamlike, fantastical land beyond, complete with an authentic, still livng and barely touched medieval castle, and the tall, rolling, forested green hills behind. Walking up the steep steps to the castle is like finding yourself in Narnia; it's like passing through the gate on Skull Island.

To Brasov by train

by josephescu

Brasov is well served by trains coming from Bucharest, Sibiu, Sighisoara & Cluj, Oradea and Targu Mures, being a major railways hub in Transylvania. Most international trains coming to/from Bucharest - Budapest pass through Brasov.

Ticket offices in Brasov station can sell return tickets way in advance to virtually any destination in the country, as well as on international routes.

A journey to/from Bucharest takes 2 ½ - 3 hours, and a return ticket costs about 45 lei (13 EUR), depending on train class.

Some other train connection to/from Brasov:
- Arad – 6-8 hours
- Deva – 4-5 hours (Arad route)
- Alba Iulia 3-4 hours (Arad route)
- Medias – 2,5 hours (Arad route)
- Sighisoara 1h 45 min – 2 hours (Arad and Oradea routes)
- Cluj Napoca 5 hours (Oradea route)
- Sibiu – 2 hours
- Tirgu Mures – 5 hours
- Miercurea Ciuc – 2 hours (Tirgu Mures route)
- Sfintu Gheorghe – 40 minutes (Tirgu Mures route)

Cafe Turabo

by antistar about Cafe Turabo

The best thing about Cafe Turabo is the location, and, on hot summer days, the hard working air-conditioning unit. The coffee is decent, the sandwiches are tasty, the decor is pleasant, and the music is relaxing and modern. The only problem was the staff, who, without being rude, didn't seem to be all that interested in serving customers.

It's a decent place to stop for a coffee and a break while touring the city.
