Council Square (Piata Sfatului)
by Fam_Stoica
The Council Square is the largest and the most famous landmark in Brasov.
There are an imposing building in the centre (The House of the Council) surrounded by many old houses from all sides.
Annually, the International Pop Music Festival "Golden Stag" took place in this square.
Rasnov Citadel
by DSwede
Located about half way between Brasov and Bran, Rasnov Citadel is well worth the short detour. It is an ancient citadel on the top of the hill. The local valley people would come in here during dangerous times. Built early, it was refortified in the 14th century to help against Turkish and Tartar invasions.
One unique thing is the central well. It took 17 years (1623~1640) for two Turkish prisoners to get down 146m to water. But as promised, they were set free after they reached the water table, thereby allowing the citadel to have its own water source for the next 200 years.
Buses to Rasnov and Bran (these towns are on the same road) leave from Brasov's Bartolomeu bus terminal about every hour.
Really nice train
by Vanity666
The easiest way to reach Brasov is by train from Bucharest. IT is 160km long ride, and the landscape is fantastic, especially during winter days. I recommend taking the fast train, a bit more expensive but worth the money. Price for one-ways ticket is 40 Lei (10 Euro). Also, I recommend taking seats on first floor because there are large windows so you can enjoy the landscape.
Only complaint is a bit uncomfortable seats (my girlfriend was complaining but they were just fine for me). The voyage lasts 3 hours.
Cetate
by Nobbe about Cetate
The Cetate (Citadel) is the former Brasov's fortress built on the top of a hill in 1533 as part of the fortifications surrounding the medieval town of Brasov. It was restored as a restaurant complex in 1982 serving Transylvanian dishes. Medieval shows by night. The waiters wear medieval clothes.
The Council Square
by Andraf
The Council Square (Piata Sfatului) is the heart of the old medieval Brasov. Lined with beautiful red-roofed merchant houses, the square is one of the finest in the country. In the center of the square lies the Council House, built in 1420. The building used to serve as Brasov's city hall; today it houses Brasov's Historical Museum. The exhibits tell the history of the Saxon guilds, who dominated Brasov during medieval times. On top of the building sits the Trumpeter's Tower which was once a watchtower for approaching barbarians before being incorporated into the building. Around the square you'll find some of the smaller landmarks captured by my other tips like the Renaissance style Hirscher House or Merchant's House (now the "Cerbul carpatin" restaurant), the beautiful entrance to the Orthodox cathedral or the museum dedicated to the Mureseanu family out of which came the first editor of Gazeta Transylvania, a political newspaper published in the 19th century. One of the square's corners is dominated by the town's most famous landmark, the Black Church. Piata Sfatului is a nice place to rest, and soak in the beautiful scenery. In the summer outdoor cafes line the square and the place is lively. Every late summer the "Golden Stag" (Cerbul de Aur) music festival takes place here.
