You can still visit it, of course.
There are some (small, IMO) chances it will keep its actual destination as a museum after the sell.
Last summer the schedule was:
monday from 11:00 - 18:00
rest of the week: 9:00 - 18:00

Price is aprox. 2.5 Eur / person;
(1,2 Euro for students)
Childs under 5 - free.

All best,
Radu

I know that it is up for sale too, and heard the rumors about it possibly becoming private property. Everything I read says it will still remain open as Radu explained. I lived in Ploiesti for several months, so here's my take on it:

There are quite a few castles in Romania worth seeing, the major ones are:
--Between Brasov and Bran, there is the less travelled, but quite nice Rasnov Citadel.
--If you have your own transportation, there is Poienari Citadel (the 'real' dracula castle). Its foundations are all that are left, but the location on top of the mountains is fantastic.
--Corvin castle in Hunedoara is quite impressive. The problem there is that the background of the city is that of a ghost steel town.
--Sighisoara does not have a castle, but there is a nice old gothic citadel.
--In Sinaia, there is Peles Castle (a more modern and still functioning one). There are also some wonderful hikes in the mountains around there.

Not to advertise my own pages, but I have some photos/tips of the above

I used to have all the facts in my head, but in case I say something wrong, I'm just going to summarize. I'd hate to feed you false information.

Bran Castle is situated on the base of the mountain at the river valley. It was originally used to control traffic along the river's road and as a toll collection point. The castle was used sometimes as a hunting lodge. Vlad never actually lived there, he visited from time to time, but was not a residence.

The Poienari Citadel was actually constructed by Vlad. It was high in the mountain to prevent attack, offering superb view to the north and south. It was built as a refuge, safehouse and part time residence. The town just to the south were allies and would help defend against attacks.

thankyou for the information...

And if you go to Poienari don't miss a short visit to Curtea de Arges Monastery, considered by many the most beautiful monastery in the country. Curtea de Arges is the small town from where you start going up the mountain to reach Poienari.

all best,
Radu

Travel Tips for Brasov

Biserica Neagra

by DPando

The gothic church was built between 1384 and 1477. its black colour is dued to a fire in 1689.
The name ?Black Church? was given to the main German Evangelic - Lutheran church in Bra?ov as a consequence of the catastrophic fire in the year 1689, when the entire city burnt down. The flames and smoke blackened the walls but the stateliness and grandeur of the church could not be destroyed.
Among Romania?s cultural monuments, the Black Church, which is still dominating the medieval centre of the city, plays an outstanding role. It is for sure one of the most important and the most imposing monument created by the Transylvania Saxons during their 850 years of history.

Fagaras museum: Icons on glass

by hydronetta

One of the most interesting exhibits in the small museum in Fagaras were the icons painted on glass. Transylvania was the centre of this art form specially in the 19th century.
Painted with vivid colors they may look naïve at first sight (as you see the figures illustrated). The point is that it is a form of religious art designed by peasants FOR peasants and their main goal was to use a language known to the people through their symbols and their artistic codes transmitting the message of the orthodox faith. Therefore the thematic were of course dedicated to the saints, Jesus, Mary, but with patterns of everyday life, social justice and ethics.

Bucharest to Brasov Express Train

by obcbreeze

The train was probably our best way to get from Bucharest to Brasov, but it presented some challenges. Our first-class ticket was good until we left the station. It then turns into go sit where ever you want. Don't leave any personal belongings unattended,. There is a good chance you will never see them again. The restrooms are a porta-john type, when you flush the bottom opens and there's the ground rushing by. On the positive side the cook in the dining car was a pleasure. He attempted to serve like we were in a 5 star restaurant. He was the best. So take the train, but be prepared for an interesting journey.

Restaurant "Pensiunea Valentin"- Poiana Brasov

by adema29 about "Pensiunea Valentin"

Located in Poiana Brasov, next to the cable car station, the restaurant has adopted an Austrian style in building, interior decorations, in waittress's dresses and dishes.
We have enjoyed many times the food and atmosphere there and have never been disappointed.
