Transportation from Dubrovnik

by kfriday

Has anyone tried traveling from Dubrovnik to Cluj? What is the best way to get there if I'm travelling with my family and don't have a vehicle? How long will it take?

RE: Transportation from Dubrovnik

by Romanian_Bat

From Dubrovnik take a bus to Zagreb and from there you can go on by train via Belgrade:
Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor - Beograd - Train no.
06.05-12.14 R413
09.05-15.25 R741/419
Beograd - Timisoara Nord 16.00-21.36 R361
Timisoara Nord - Cluj Napoca - Train no.
21.54-04.47 A1943/1942
The connection is too tight as the R361 could have a delay due to customs. Better spend the night in Timisoara (www.hotelnord.ro, just across the street from the station and one of the best quasi-budget places to stay in the city), a beautiful Habsburg city and go relaxedly the following day:
Timisoara Nord - Cluj Napoca - Train no.
05.54-10.57 IC233/232
06.45-12.47 A1835/1834
14.54-21.20 A1767/1766
Another option goes via Budapest instead of Belgrade:
Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor - Budapest Keleti - Train no.
07.10-14.23 R205
15.22-20.58 EC53
Budapest Nyugati - Cluj Napoca - Train no. (attention, change of stations in Budapest, allow 20 minutes walking or 10 minutes by tram between the two):
10.00-18.11 R365
16.00-00.22 R407

Travel Tips for Cluj-Napoca

Covrigi

by Taffi

In the morning you will see people walking in the street with 'covrigi' (pretzels) on a string. They are cheap and delicious. I recommend the ones you can buy in Regele Ferdinand street, next to the Tosca shoe shop. You can buy one for as little as 5 bani (5000 old lei) .

The statue of Baba Novac

by Fam.Rauca

The statue was created by the sculptor Virgil Fulicea in the year 1975.
Baba Novac was a courageous general in the army of the Mihai Viteazul.
After the battle by Miraslau, in the year 1601, as the Mihai Viteazul was murdered, Baba Novac was caught and was killed, through inhuman procedures.
The monument was located exactly on the place where the cadaver of the general was.

The Orthodox cathedral

by Fam.Rauca

This beautiful construction was built in 1923 to 1930, and it is a very important religion objective in the city.
It is the creation of the architect George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu and was built in the Byzantine style.
The idea of this construction had the episcope Nicolae Ivan, who was burying, later, into the crypt of the church.
The construction with eight towers has a height of 64m.
The pictures were realized by the two artists Anastasie Demian and Catul Bogdan in the years 1928-1933.
The cathedral is placed in centre of Cluj-Napoca in the Avram Iancu Square.

Bastionul Croitorilor (The Bastion of the tailors)

by Fam.Rauca

The bastion of the tailors is a part of the medieval fortress that was builds in Cluj in the fifteenth century.
The bastion was rebuilt later, in the year 1627 until 1629, and was furnished into the existing form.
It is the only segment of the fortress that remained integral.
The name of the construction comes from the tailors, which defended the city into this period.
It is a beautiful and interesting locate to stroll and to look at the history.

Tailors Tower

by HORSCHECK

The Tailors Tower (Bastionul Croitorilor) is one of the very few remains of the former defensive walls and citadel of Cluj-Napoca.

The history of this fortification system dates back to the 15th century. The tower was rebuilt in the early 17th century and it has been extensively renovated just lately after years of neglect.

Directions:
The Tailors Tower stands at the Piata Baba Novac, near the southeastern end of the old town of Cluj-Napoca.
