Getting here from Bulgaria

by quebec123

Hi! I will be in Sofia in August, and I would like to go to Constanta (more specifically Novadori). I was wondering what was the most efficient/cheap way to do this, and how long it would take me exactly. Can I do this in 24h by using trains/buses?

And from there, what is the most efficient way to get down to greece?

Thanks!

I vaguely remember there was a direct Sofia-Constanta bus. If this direct bus doesn't exist take the daily bus from Sofia to Bucharest (trip is about 8 hours, costs about €20), then catch one of the hourly buses from Bucharest to Constanta (3 1/2 hours, €12-13) and finally use local transport to get from Constanta to Navodari.

Then to get to Greece go back from Constanta to Bucharest and catch one of the two-three daily buses to Athens.

The most intuitive way is to go from Sofia to Bucharest by bus or train and then from Bucharest to Constanta. You can also go to Varna by nightbus and every day aronud 6.30 in the morning there is a bus from there to to Constanta. This can be much faster and a bit cheaper and it surely worksand gets you there in less than 12 hours, but offers much less flexibility since the bus is only once daily. To Navodari you must get some local transportation or taxi.
From Constanta to Greece...just go back to Sofia by the same method that you have chosen to reach Constanta. (If you choose the way through Varna, which, as I said, is faster and cheaper but only once daily - the bus from Constanta to Varna leaves at 17.30).Then there are several buses daily to Thessaloniki or Athens and also 3 trains. Travelling by train is cheaper, while by bus is faster and more comfortable.
autogari.ro for buses to Romania, bdz.bg for trains inside Bulgaria and also the international ones to Greece and Romania, avtogari.info for some very limited look on the Bulgarian bus schedules, but has almost all of the national buses from Sofia.

Thanks! I might actually do both to have a chance of having a look at all these cities. I will probably do Sofia-Bucharest-Constanta on the way there, and then Constanta-Varna-Athens. I just want to make sure there are daily buses doing Varna-Athens, and I would like to know how much does it cost and how long does it take to do this trip?

Travel Tips for Constanta

Black SEA......history

by alirom

In the 7th Centuries of B.C, the Greeks founded a number of colonies on the Black Sea shore. These were the ancient cities of Histria, Tomis and Callatis (now Constanta and Mangalia). Herodot, the Greek historian of the time, was the first to mention the native inhabitants of the land. These were the Dacians, a branch of the people living in the Balkans, named Thracians. Five centuries later the supremacy of Greece declined, and a new power arose: the Romans. By this time, the Dacians were united for the first time under the authority of a wise ruler called Burebista. He founded a capital city in the heights of the Carpathian Mountains. Its ruins can still be seen today. The new city - Sarmizegetusa - was well-organized and defended by powerful fortresses. 200 years later, in the 1st century A.D., another great Dacian leader, Decebalus, became the ruler of Sarmizegetusa. Meanwhile, the legendary richness of the country made it a temptation for the Roman Empire. The Dacians fiercely fought to defend their land against Roman occupation. Decebalus resisted the Romans more than 20 years and only the great emperor Traianus could defeat him. But he needed to build a bridge in order to get his troops over the Danube river. This task was accomplished by the famous ancient engineer Apolodor of Damascus, and the remains of that unprecedented bridge still stand today. Traianus could conquer the great Dacian city only after one traitor sold him the secret of the hidden water pipes. The Romans left the city without water, forcing it to surrender. Decebalus killed himself, and Traianus celebrated the victory for 123 days. In honor of this victory he also erected a sculpted column to tell the story of conquering Dacia. Traianus's column still stands in Rome. During the two centuries of Roman Occupation, new roads and cities were built in Dacia. The official language was Latin, from which the present Romanian language was born. The Romans retreated from Dacia in 271 A.D.

Packing List

by bluecat

You MUST bring fine clothes suitalble for nightlife. With a bit of sexy look (all Romanian women wear sexy clothes when they are at th sea-side, and especially young women).
Don't forget to take light shoes like slipers and/or sandals, you will need them when you take long walks in the city or go at the beach.
OF COURSE SWIMMING SUIT!
You may have good clothes for rainy weather. It happens, not often, but it happenes. Don't even think to go there without cream/oil for protecting when you have a suntan. I recomend even use it when you go walking in the daytime, otherwise in the evening you can find yourself with a burned skin.
Also have some pills for stimach problems. Not being used to local cuisine can give you some trouble.
Carry with you all the time a botlle of water or juice. The weather is very hot in the summertime. If you're not suficiently hidrated you can feel sick very easily. Don't worry, you'll find all you need all over the city, even if you didn't bring any. A bit dangerous. I won't recomend camping in a tent for a foreigner. You risk havin your things stolen. You can go camping in special places arranged by private people. It's more safe than the public ones.

Romanian Navy Museum

by timada

I am not so fond of history but I love navy and military museums . Navy Museum in Constanta is close to my home , central situation , and I go often there specially now when I meet Mr. Ursu an expert in history and a marvelous guide !
Four sections are presented here : ancient , medieval , modern and contemporary eras in 22 rooms . The museum is not very big but it 's made with love for our history .
It holds thousands of replicas of various types of ships proper to the Romanian military and commercial navy since its beginnings till today, alongside navigation instruments, documents, books and photos, white and fire arms, anchors, propellers, lighthouse lenses, flags and colors, pictures, various exhibits of a high scientific and documentary value.
