Pensiunea Vidra: Largest garden
Pensiunea Vidra is also family owned, the sleep is fine, some rooms are small but what counts is the setting which is incredible.
There wasn't too much cooking going on there , seems that the owners don't like to cook for tourist, but I may be wrong - but that's ok we went to a restaurant 15 minutes walk. The breakfast though is rich and tasty. And there are two grills and a fireplace where you can make your own meal.
Unique Quality: A large garden with a pond, two sun decks, apple trees and a nice huski dog. The "palinca" is great.
Waking up and have breakfast, warm sun, get alive and then in the evening stay and chat with other travelers and with the hosts, cooking some meal with all, that's relaxing, you forget all the worries and troubles.

Pensiunea Dorina: True natural accommodation
Botiza is tucked away from the main road, it's a peaceful little village, a very good stay after one day of visiting Maramures.
Pensiunea Dorina is runned by Mrs. Dorina Patraus and her husband, lovely hosts, smiling and nice.
Unique Quality: Welcome food and the best palinca (traditional plum brandy), great rich and naturl breakfast, home cooked dinner, you'll lick your fingers.

Various: Guesthouses
While we arranged he accommodation through Nord Nord Vest travel agency, everything concerning accommodation was already planned for us. Luckily unlike most travel angencies that prefer to locate you in hotels, this agency had picked up small guesthouses (in some cases in small villages) but with style. Besides them being well kept and atmospheric they also provided great homecooked meals (at least in two cases) which was great.
Of course this is due to the fact that Maramures is not as touristy as Transylvania or Black Sea coast so most of the accommodation is on small scale with a more personal touch

Cobwobs Hostel: New Hostel in Sighet
An English man at Sighet railway station asked if I would like to stop at his new Hostel. In less than 2 minutes by car we arrived at the large hostel, situated in a quiet garden close to the town! Rob and his family made me very welcome and comfortable and were very knowledgeable suggesting many places for me to visit. I had some very good meals there and they took to some very remote, beautiful villages and hiking in the hills . I had a really good time during the 4 nights whilst in Sighet, the locals being very friendly. The town centre was only 5 minutes walk away. It was one of the best hostels ( clean, hot showers, friendly) and certainly the best for service that I have stopped at.

Ion Costinar: A family House in Botiza
The best word to describe this house is charming. Here, you will meet a entire romanian family that will give you a great and kind service. Both breakfast and souper are splendid, and if you want to eat a real romain meal, better do it here than in any restaurant. Besides, while you eat, your host will enter sometimes to the dining room to serve and drink with him the typical licuor of Maramures (one of the strongest I have taste).
Otherwise, do not expect to be in a room like a hotel one. Here you will sleep in the same house of the family, a typical wood house of Maramures. But this is the best. Travel is not only seeing places, it is knowing people of this places too.
Unique Quality: As we reach Maramures at night, we cannot appreciate the views when we arrive. So one of the big surprises of this travel it was in the balcony of the house, the first morning we woke up. The views of the town and the mountain were incredible, and as you see them, you only wanted to go out and walk along its ways.

Stay in Sapanta
We stayed at Hotel Tisa in Sighetu Marmatiei and it wasn't bad, but you could do much better. If possible, it would be much better to go to Sapanta via taxi or private car and stay in one of the clean and cozy pensions there. They have much more charm and comfort and are a bit cheaper I imagine than the utilitarian and frayed Hotel Tisa. However, you'll probably have to stay in Sighetu if you have only one night to spare, as the only daily train from Cluj gets in between 10 and 11 pm. There are other accomodation options in Sighetu, but they were full when we got there.

private homes
just ask the inhabitants of the villages
you can stay at them
but be careful, speak about the price before!
I had one occasion where they expected much too much
Unique Quality: the chance to get a real original meal
and to see how the people do actually live

Q: Crossing to Solotvino "Im sorry to ask this, but I have to make sure because people are telling me different things? Is the nearest crossing Solotvino..."
A: "Unfortunately, at this time there is no border crossing at all between Romania and Ukraine in Maramures county. The bridge between Sighet and Solotvino has been closed..."
