Hotel Premier: Premier Boutique Hotel

This hotel opened in 2011 and we were surprised by the nice rooms. When looking for the hotel you will find the building with the big "Hotel Premier" on it but the entrance is actually in the building next door through the arch above which is written "Pensiunea History". You will have to climb up the staircase to the upper floor where you find the reception.

The reception staff is very friendly. There is free wifi which worked perfectly. In the corridor there are sofas and a clubtable with an ashtray. No smoking in the rooms as far as I could tell. We had room no. 105 which comes with part of the balcony from which you have a great view on part of the main square.

The room was nicely decorated and comes with a minibar, a flatscreen TV. Since we stayed only one night we didn't mind that there was no wardrobe. A cloak stand was available. There are no seats either you will have to sit on the bed or on the sofas in the corridor. The bathroom is large with an excellent shower. There is a sliding door to the bathroom. Please note that the light switch is covered by the door when it's open (we were looking for it for ages).

Breakfast consisted of a small buffet and eggs to order. My scrambled eggs were yummy.

We booked this hotel through the website booking.com and paid 170 RON (Euro 41.00) for the double room including breakfast. We thought that this was very good value.

The airport bus dropps you right on the square, so there is no need to take a taxi if you travel light.

Pensiune Ana Maria: Targu Mures' best guesthouse

Something like a home for Elvis Hapsberg, the funny eight-room pension -- just northeast of the centre -- is a green-and-white B&B with rooms that mix styles from the 1970s and the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Staff are great, as are the giant breakfasts that include table-full portions of local spreads grown in the guesthouse's farm outside town. Rooms have TV. The apartments in the front catch some traffic noise but are bigger. From the centre, walk northeast toward the citadel, then veer right along Strada Mihai Viteazul, turning right after the Theater School on Strada Papui Ilarian. A single/double/apartment runs 25/29/37 euro including breakfast. I enjoyed it thoroughly (June 2006).

Unique Quality: Good location, great English-speaking staff, some of Transylvania's best (and biggest) breakfasts.
