...Historic center....

The most picturesque street in the Upper town remains Strada Avram Iancu (1556) which connects the Council Tower, in the Large Square, with the Ursuline Church. On this street is found the oldest residential house in the city, Casa Bobel, which keeps the same look for nearly 500 years.
The house at No. 9 has an arcaded court based on an Italian Renaissance design, and at the back of the yard you can still see the ruin of a defense tower.
Opposite, at 9, is the former residence of Brukenthal family with a wonderful arcaded courtyard.
Avram Iancu No 21 was the home of composer Gheorghe Dima (1874-1925) who wrote choral music inspired by Romanian folklore.
About halfway down Avram Iancu on the left is a steep passage, Pasajul Scolii (The School Passage), which brings you below the city walls into the rutted cobbles of Strada Movilei.
Strada Nicolae Balcescu (1492), the main street of the town, is today a pedestrian only shopping street lined with impressive buildings in Renaissance style.
It connects Piata Mare with the newly renovated Piata Uniri.
You can find here shops, a supermarket, cafes, restaurants and the 'Imparatul Romanilor' hotel and restaurant.
Corner with Piata Unirii stands an Art Deco building built at beginning of XX century.
The most important building on this street is at number 12, Michael Brukenthal Palace built after 1786.

Wander around the History Museum

Wander around the History Museum (sometimes known as the Primaria Municipiului). Although it is supposed to be open Tuesdays through Sundays (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), I needed to find someone to let me in. You enter through the inner cloistered courtyard of the Old City Hall (built in 1475!)--well worth your time just to admire the surroundings. Although you may have some trouble following things since labelling is only in Romanian, the scope and sheer quantity of artifacts here is definitely worth your time. Just about anything and everything related to history is here--art, coins, armour, prints, local crafts--in one way or another and although you may not come away with lots of new things learned, just being exposed to how life has changed here over the past thousand years is instructive.
