I dont know if you ll benefit or not... But if you get to go you ll have a great time. Rumanians like to go to the forest in week ends and just make a fire and cook some meat and mich with mustard. Great places they have here.... amazing landscapes to eat, drink some house made wine and have a siesta under a tree.
The Council Tower (Clock Tower)
by codrutz
One main landmark of Sibiu is the white Council Tower (but I always refer to it as the Clock Tower). The tower is located right between the Great Square and the Little Square and the passage between those two is made under the tower, for people and cars also.
The Council Tower was built in the 13th century being the first time mentioned in a document dated 1370. Its name is related to the next building, which was the first Town Hall of the city. The tower became the entrance gate of the second fortified walls. I recommend you climb into the tower, see and take photos of a nice view of both squares and the roof tops.
See also my other photos of the Clock Tower, including a night shot.
Podul Mincinosilor-Liars Bridge-Sibiu
by adema29
One of the top of the "must see" list in Sibiu is Podul Mincinosilor-Liars Bridge, a bridge built from wood before 1771 and re-built in forged iron in 1859. It was second bridge of this type in Europe, the first one in Romania.
The most known "legend" about the name of the bridge, is that here was the place where all the young couples use to share promises. And, as we all know, not everybody can bring down the Moon for the loved one :)
Another credible one is that in old times (not so old actually) the merchants who where cheating their clients were thrown off this bridge.
Even if it was real or not, we can see the effects now. In Sibiu people are a bit different, their sincerity being specific for that area.
Catholic Church-Sibiu
by adema29
The Catholic Church was built between 1726 and 1733 as a Baroque Church. I was surprised to find such a nice church in Romania, where the Baroque is not found so often.
The most impressive elements are the stained glasses (made in Budapest in 1901), the Mary and Child fresco (painted in 1777 the Austrian painter Anton Steinwald) and the small church organ (built in 1860, by Karl Hesse in Vienna).
The Tower was added later, in 1738, finishing very well the general Baroque assembly.
Anyway, that building is very well framed by the other two buildings, the Parochial House and City Hall.
Lutsch House
by iwys
Lutsch house was built in the 15th century. Originally it was topped by a four-storey tower.
It was used as a guest house for visiting dignitaries. The house then became then the property of the Altemberger family, and in 1537 it was bought by the county leader Petrus Haller, whose sons conceded the building to Johann Lutsch in 1593. In 1661 Georg Reussner bought the house, and his heirs donated it to the town.
The building is now used by the Frankfurt-Bucharest Bank and the Democratic Forum of Romanian Germans.
