No camping site in Sibiu

Well, a European Cultural Capital that has no camping site... That's the case in Sibiu. :(( Hostels from 40-45 RON per night, the nearest legal place for puting up tents is 15 km away from the town.
We camped near the ex-camping (they're building a hotel there right now), on the borders of the Dumbrava forest, behind a motel. Quite scary, I don't recommend it, though in a larger group you should feel safer.

The next day we found out that in the nearby Astra open-air museum (a 10-mintes walk from Dumbrava or 1-2 bus stops, I guess) there is a dormitory, 25 RON per person - quite acceptable.

Pastravaria "Albota": Between Sibiu and Muntii Fagaras

Even though this guesthouse is closer to the Fagaras Mountains than Sibiu, I have put this tip here for the moment, Sibiu being Cultural Capital and all that. At just an hour's drive from Sibiu but at the foot of the picturesque Fagaras Mountains, Albota is very well located.

Unique Quality: This is a tourist complex consisting of several houses and chalets. There is a large trout farm, a swimming pool, sauna and games room with Internet access. Outdoor activites such as cycling, quad bikes (ugh), horse riding, fishing. Not your "genuinely Romanian place", but the location and landscape compensate. The restaurant is rather good, serving meat and fish from the hotel's own farm and locally made cheeses. German and some English spoken.

Note that this place was very expensive, but prices rose dramatically in 2007 due to the close location to Sibiu, cultural capital. They may fall again slightly. At a lower price I would recommend this place.

Hotel Ela: Sibiu's little secret

When I first got off the train in Sibiu my intention was to stay at the Hotel Imparatul but then I decided to step off the beaten path so to speak. The owners were great and very willing to provide advise if asked from what to see to where to get a good bite to eat at a local restaurant. It's a clean, well kept place with a homely feel and security provided by a friendly German Shepard.

Unique Quality: It's a pension with a nice courtyard in the middle and about a 5 min walk down from the main tourists sites.

The black cat: Nice small hostel as central as can be

The black cat is a very nice, small, clean hostel right in the centre of Sibiu. They have 2 dorms and can accomodate around 20 people. The hostel is owned bu a german-romanian couple. In wintertime there is a chance that the hostel is not open so call in advance then. One of the nicest hostels i have ever stayed in so far. The windows open up to piata mica so the early morning view is as nice as it can be. The kitchen is not too big but cozy and very welcoming. I've spend a good amount of time here drinking tea or stronger. Well equipped for cooking. Furthermore there are 2 bathrooms and a washing machine. A big telly in one of the dorms.

Ela Hotel: Quiet and afordable place near the center

We have stayed three nights in Ela Hostel and we found it very nice. The rooms were clean, with private bath and tv. There were private parking and a kitchen to those who want to use it.

Unique Quality: The distance from the center of Sibiu and the quiet place are the main aspects.
