British ex-pat looking for social activities in Timisoara

by allysim

I moved to Timisoara from the UK a couple of months ago, for a work contract. I'm due to be here at least another 4 months. I've not yet managed to meet any British (or other English speaking) workers for a bit of social company over here. Does anyone have any recommendations on local activities or clubs that would be a good way to meet people? I'm also thinking of joining a gym, but I don't know of any yet. Any advice would be welcome. I live very close to the city centre but don't have a car at the moment. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Romania. I can give you some general advice. First, Romanians speak English, so start from the contacts at your job. They must know for sure about gyms or spas for sports and so.
As for car, take my advice and forget about it! It takes long and the bureaucracy is too big and it will give you nothing else but headaches. Rely on cabs (you can find some cabbie to establish a sort of permanent service with the guy) and public transportation.
Like I said, try with your co-workers, there must be a nicer and more open one amongst them :).
I hope this helps,
BEst regards.

See Unirii Square. It is my favourite. Very silent and very beautiful surrounded by all those old buildings and between the Catholic Dome and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
It makes you feel like going back in time ...

" My heart will forever be in Timisoara"

Some facts
Timisoara is in the region of Banat in Romania. Many people living here speak both Romanian and Serbian. The city is an upbeat lively city that has a number of museums, ancient cathedrals, monuments and parks that are worth a visit!

Historic Timisoara is organized like a cross, with Piata Libertatii at the heart .
Piata Libertatii is Timisoara's most popular and centrally located hangout, filled with cafes, supermarkets and beer patios.
Blvd. 16th December, a pedestrian walkway that opens onto Piata Libertatii is also a great place to grab an ice cream or a beer.

Piata Unirii , 110 yards north of Piata Libertatii is Timisoara's main meeting place, a quiet square lined with amber, orange and blazing-red 18th century apartments.

Interestingly...
Timisoara was the FIRST city in Romania to be free of communism on December 20th 1989!!!

"A Student's haven"

In the city of Timisoara there are 4 different "Universities"
