Bus or Train from Sibiu to Timisoara Nord?

by dave_e

Hello,

I see that the train takes 10 hours from Sibiu to Timisoara. Is there a faster bus that leaves in the morning? How long does it take by car?

Thank you!
Dave

According to www.bahn.de there are 3 direct trains daily between these two stations. They take between 5 and 6 hours, not 10 hours.

According to www.autogari.ro, there are also a few buses, taking about 6.5 hours.

Thanks for the reply Alan.

On www.bahn.de I see only one direct train to Timisoara:

Sibiu
Timisoara Nord Th, 04.10.07
Th, 04.10.07
dep 15:40
arr 21:38
5:58 0

All the earlier trains look as if they take 10 hours.

I was hoping to catch a train in the morning. I will be hiking out of the Cindrel Mountains that morning and I need to be in Timisoara sometime in the afternoon on the same day.

Thanks again!
Dave

There are also direct trains at 05.05 at 17.35, taking just over 5 hours. But I guess they are respectively too early and too late for you. Unfortunately it looks like you may have the same problem with buses - they are either extremely early or in the afternoon, at least according to autogari.ro. Unless someone else here knows of an indirect route that would get you there in the morning.

Travel Tips for Timisoara

Students quarter 'On' 24 hours a day

by bertioga

Just south-east of town centre, a 5 minutes walk from the canal, in Dalei st. and its side streets, there are tens of students’ bars and almost as many discos. One place to eat is the Millennium, where you can see very local food on the counter and it is also good value for your money. There seems to be a crowd of youths having a good time at almost every time of day. Why not join them?

Unirìi square (Union square)

by xaver

A few meters of walking distance from the Victory sqaure there is the union square named union for the orthodox cathedral and the roman one facing each other at the two sides of the square. The caratheristic of this square is the historical pastel painted buildings all around a garden. In the 18th century this used to be the main commercial point of the city and the place where military and religious processions had place.

The reformed church

by Mique

It is not indicated at all from the city centre and there isn't very much left to see. But here it is that the 1989 revolution started that got Ceascescu and his wife out of office and broke the communist rule. The priest (or whatever his designation is in the reformed church) spoke out against Ceascescu and his politics. When the security forces tried to get him and his wife out, people in protest formed a barrier. But the priest and his wife were arrested anyway. This let to an uproar in Timisoara and got spread out over the country.

You can enter the building but it is almost all private appartments now. And the church was closed when i was there.

I worked in a summer school in Timisoara in '98, my first job in Romania. Timisoara is generally more westernised than other areas of the country, and it is a very attractive city with many parks and interesting baroque architecture. The summer school was fairly informal and I had a great time. My older class of kids made a documentary about the town.
